Vines: as good as tentacles, or BETTER than tentacles? XD
aka OMG VATHARA WROTE A SAIYUKI FIC AHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Entanglements is set after volume 9 of the first manga series and goes into AU territory. In the story she has.. interesting answers to questions such as "Did Sanzo kill enough youkai to be in danger of turning into one?"; "Why does Hakkai have vines in his youkai form?"; "Is it a coincidence that Kougaiji looks almost like a half-breed?"; and even "Is this the first time humans and youkai have tried to wipe each other out?" I am wondering if the AU label is the reason why some of the canon references seem a little off, but it's a small drop in the huge bucket of love I have for this story. I really really hope she writes more Saiyuki fic. <3 <3 <3
ETA: Ooops, I forgot to mention it's Sanzo/Hakkai. Which is interesting, given how Vathara doesn't write much slash and the last fic I remember having any was the GW crossover, and she wrote the "obvious" pairing(s) there (Trowa/Quarte and sort-of Heero/Duo). I'm not complaining, mind--I've always been a Sanzo/Hakkai fan--I'm just curious.
ETA 2: Upon (multiple) rereading(s), I think I can safely say Vathara's characterization of Gojyo is a little off. I'm not sure it's related to the fic being Sanzo/Hakkai, or if her take of Gojyo just doesn't mesh with mine. Or possibly both.
