Monday's the day!

Finally, a free moment to myself - a free weekend even! Wow.

No, it’s not holidays yet (in fact, exams will start coming in from Tuesday). But on Monday morning I’ll be heading to the Austin Hospital to have my tonsils taken out. The call came at pretty short notice, and as my nurse told me at my pre-op appointment, I had literally been on the dreaded waiting list for all of 5 days!!! It’s interesting in that whilst this isn’t supposed to be a major operation, it is a *lot* more serious for adults than for children. During my specialist appointment, the doctor honestly only wanted to tell me one thing (picture him sitting me down): “Ok, so we’re going to take them out if that’s what you want. Now…this is really…really…*really* going to hurt!!!” Hmm.

Yesterday was hopefully my last day at work for a couple of weeks. My friends and co-workers have all been really good to me on the whole - Jean brought me a ‘good luck’ card and an awesome present (a bilingual copy of Beowulf - she knows me well ;) ), whilst Di was sighing about how much she was going to miss me, and that they’d both come and visit whilst I’m recovering.

The only bumps came from people who have been scarred by surgical experiences, and whilst wanting to pass on good-hearted advice, were a bit off the mark. I even had one dear colleague (who will remain nameless) earlier in the week who was insisting that I have a priest on stand-by to say the Last Rites should the need arise! That’s not all, because he then stated categorically that 3% of all people who go under general anaesthetic don’t wake up!!! Jean, who was a nurse for many years, wasn’t too convinced (or impressed) by that ‘statistic’ when I told her, but I already knew that that couldn’t possibly be correct…

Di asked me yesterday if I was scared about it all, and I can honestly say ‘no'. I’m a lot more scared about the operation not going ahead because my tonsils have been playing up again (perfect timing, you little bastards…). It’s been just about the hottest November week on record, and it’s been a double-edged sword for me. On the one hand, the amount of water I’ve drunk has inflamed my tonsils once again, but on the other hand, had it been a cooler week, I don’t think I could have kept the inflammation under control. Tonic water and salt washes have helped as well, so waking up this morning I feel that that little crisis has passed. :)

Anyway, intending on having a quiet weekend, so time for a shower and a bit of quiet reading. Slán anois!
