It seems to me it's both.

However it depends on the situation - so more of some less of the other - but certainly both.

For perception... I'm intuitively leaning towards experience to blame. Shades of comparison always creeping in, building upon what's gone before in your life. Thoughts pieced together as building blocks to create a new whole idea of whatever it is.

Age..... perhaps is the thing that saps the energy away, the 'why not' jump into it optimism harder to grasp.

is age always something that decreases energy? what are the benefits of age? your comment seems to imply that age is physical while experience is mental. is that what you mean?

I don't think it's either - I think it's experiences. Tiny but notable difference between someone who has experience with X, and someone who has had experiences with X.
