This is a blog entry about the YuGiOh! Fanfiction Contest, an elimination-based pairing contest hosted in proxy by Ryou VeRua in the fanfiction.net forum that also happens to be the top ranking YuGiOh! forum, post-count wise.

They are all certainly talented aren't they! And it is an interesting paring too. I'm only half way through reading them right now, but man they are amazing writers.

In answer to the question I may be a little biased as it's pretty much all I write and what I prefer to read, but I say more cannon then creative writing, although they both have their place. Why? Well besides enjoying it more it can, especially in the harder rounds, be more of challenge which is what you want in a competition. Canon, and manipulating cannon and canon-esque situations are also what we originally watched the show for and write fanfiction for so that is where the characters base their experiences off. It is nice to see if a pairing would work in a cannon setting. Which may not be possible for some characters without blatant OOCness or incredible mindfucking but some ties to cannon are certainly nice. As it is a fanfiction contest there should be more elements of the fandom then just the characters in some of the fics.

That's not to say that AUs and creative scenarios aren't good either. They are very enjoyable and do take considerable effort to write too. I won't deny that. I just like tying things to canon when I can. Dispite my rant I don't feel stronly about it either,I just like canon writing. ^^
