FIRE IN THE BLOOD
“Stay back” she says even though she knows he is just an immortal. He has no active power to hurt her with apart from their shared memories.
“Don’t come any closer” she repeats, and her eyes move frantically from either side of the corridor, as if praying for the guards to come and save her even though the guards are worse equipped than her to cause him any pain.
He keeps walking towards her, his eyes fixated on hers. He tries to hold them refusing to let go. He has let go too many times in his life. This time it won’t be one of them. He had sworn it on his blood.
“Stop, Elle. Just stop. You know me. You can feel it in your heart” he starts not being able to stop his voice from cracking and sounding like a broken record. He has repeated these words ever since he walked in the Company.
For all those hurtful, painful minutes during which Elle stared at him with a blank expression on her face.
This hurt him more than electric shocks ever could. For a minute he stands still too. He can see little sparks dancing on her fingertips, but she hasn’t yet directed them at him.
She is hesitant, wavering, reluctant to really injure him and that gives him hope.
He wants to take confusion away, he wants to show her how beautiful everything can be for her, for him, for the both of them as long as they stick together.
“Elle” he whispers and somehow he feels that his voice could shatter walls he didn’t even know were there.
“Shut up, just shut up! You are trying to confuse me. You are good at that” she scowls. “Daddy warned me about you and all your tricks” Elle sneers and this time she doesn’t recoil.
She stands her ground proudly, defiantly, lifting her right palm showing him her power.
Adam feels like he is about to lose his patience. He can survive eternity but not this…
“You can’t kill me, Elle” he begins carefully.
“No, but I sure as hell can cause you a lot of pain” she threatens and the blue of her eyes looks arctic, devoid of warmth.
Where has his Elle gone? What have they done to her?
“You have no idea” Adam admits and when he takes one step forward he is the recipient of all her rage.
Her force is not jolts, it’s not sparks, it’s lightning and thunder and they run through his body like spears. He can feel the whole intensity causing his body to spasm.
But still he is there. There for more. More venom from here but it isn’t even her own.
A second onset of lightning and his knees buckle under his weight and he thinks that he is this close to fainting, but he knows he has to hold on.
Time is precious and this time is not enough. Funny how, a man who has eternity can say that.
He leans against the wall with effort but he focuses his eyes on her.
Pleading, begging to be recognized.
The love in his eyes compels her to look at him.
She shakes her head as her lower lip begins to quiver.
“Who are you? Why are you doing this? Why is this so important to you? We are gonna kill you! Leave while you still have a chance” she says and her tone conceals doubt.
“Leave” she repeats and he thinks he sees her wince at the moan that escapes his mouth.
Could she feel concerned about his wellbeing? Could this be a remainder of the love they shared?
He feels completely healed now. Regaining his strength he detaches himself from the wall walking forward.
“You wanna know why I am doing this? It’s simple really… I love you. I love you, Elle Bishop” Adam says matter-of-factly like there is no room for disbelief.
He senses her eyes follow his every movement, even the slightest one but this time she doesn’t recoil. She hangs her hands by her sides, clenched into fists, still not sure how she should proceed.
“You love me?” she scoffs. “You don’t even know me. Not really. We have barely spoken a few words to each other”.
She folds her arms in front of her chest and waits, raising an eyebrow.
How could it be that she didn’t remember him even now?
How could it be that her heart didn’t scream to be united with his?
How could it be that her arms didn’t ache to hold him?
No matter what the Haitian had done to her, shouldn’t there be something inside of her telling her that they are one?
Adam sighed despite himself and exhaled again trying to regain his composure.
“Is that what Bob made you believe? How far has the Haitian erased your memory, Elle? Did he make you forget that you love me and I love you and that this love was the only good and pure thing that ever sprung out of this mausoleum, this cemetery of souls?”
“I have no idea what you are talking about! Nobody did anything to me! You are just talking nonsense” she said defensively, a smug grin on her face.
Oh God, she had no idea. No idea whatsoever.
Adam took two steps forward.
“He erased everything, didn’t he? Our talks, our dreams, everything we shared whenever you visited my cell…
And, of course, you don’t remember the experiments he put you through, right? All the tests and trials with you hooked up to machines and generators like a human battery trying to check how much power you had.
I heard your screams from across the floor. Do you know how that felt?” he mouthed, his lips twisting into a grimace of disgust.
“And you want to stay here, Elle? And you believe in him blindly? What kind of father would do that to his own daughter?”.
“Shut up! Just Shut up, you don’t know what you are saying. My father loves me. He would never do that to me. You are trying to confuse me just like he said you would” and with that the blond girl unclenched her fists unleashing scorching hell on him.
This time she was angrier, she was confused and blind with hatred and denial.
Adam knew she wanted to be loved. She needed to be loved and accepted and him talking against her father infuriated her.
Who did she have left, if not her father? She wasn’t ready to let go, to know.
The blast made him stumble. He fell on the floor clasping his stomach, where the jolt shook him.
“Aaaargh” he groaned and felt hot tears on his face. But he didn’t know if it was from the pain of the jolt or the pain of losing her.
He opened his eyes with effort, his eyelids stinging from the electricity and tried to look at her and her face.
“Elle, please. Listen to me” he murmured. “Don’t let it go down like this. We deserve better than that. We can’t end it here” he lifted his hand towards her, as if calling her to take him by the hand and lift him up.
He wanted to still hold hope but then again, what of what he had seen in those centuries that he’s been alive- but not necessarily living- made him believe that hope was plausible, that love always won in the end?
For several seconds his hand was there up in the air, despite the pain he felt.
But she didn’t take it. Instead she was there a few feet away from him, observing him as if he was a bug inside a glass.
No expression on her face.
But maybe he was wrong because there was something in her eyes now.
Was it anger? Was it sorrow? Was it remorse?
Whatever it was, it was better than the nothingness that haunted her eyes before.
“Elle, please” he repeated like scolding a little child. “Please remember who you are, who I am. We have no more time left”
“Oh, I know. Your time is up. And next thing you know, you will be in a cell, Even your own old one if you are sentimental” she mocked him.
Adam closed his eyes and tried not to cry anymore. It was useless.
No tears could save him or deliver them both from this hell they were trapped in.
There were no angels to carry them both away on their wings and if he ever believed that Elle was his angel, he could say now that if anything she was his angel of Death.
His forehead rested on the floor and his knees were folded. He felt weak and disoriented.
He once thought his destination was Elle. The final destination of his journey but maybe he was wrong. It would be easier to give up.
Just lie there, helpless and motionless till the guards came and carried him away, locked in a place without a sky or a window again.
Maybe that was his life and what he deserved for everything he had done. He knew he wasn’t a saint. So maybe he didn’t deserve an angel.
Not even the Angel of Death, since he would never die.
He would forever be stuck in this vicious circle of pain and rejection, solitude his only companion, till everyone around him rotted into blackness.
But no!
He couldn’t accept that. He deserved better than that and even if he didn’t he had all the time in the world to prove himself and make himself worthy of happiness!
His hands felt numb but he fought it.
He extended his fingers and felt the familiar tingle of power and alertness run through his body. Then he clenched his fingers into a tight fist.
And like that he stood up, his jaw hard and his eyes relentless.
His eyes must have scared her because she took a step back and extended her hand again ready to jolt him.
“What the hell? I told you to stand down” she exclaimed.
“I know. I just didn’t comply” he said and decisively covered the distance between them, grabbing her by the arms. He pulled her into his embrace hoping that the mere touch of him, the warmth of his body could somehow shock her into remembering.
But nothing. Nothing instead of pain.
Excruciating pain, the one she gave him by shocking him as she was forced to embrace him.
Her hands on his back she just kept on shocking him.
He screamed trying to pull himself together. He couldn’t faint now. Only adrenaline could save him.
“Let go of me” she screamed.
“Never. I promised to save you and never let you go”
“You are crazy!” she yelled again, her mouth in the nape of his neck.
“I am gonna burn you, do you understand? Perhaps you can’t die, but I can make you wish you were dead. I'm gonna leave your skin sizzling, clinging to your bones like jello”
“I don’t care. You are going to make me wish I were dead? I already do, because without you I don’t want to live” he said and brought his hands to her face cupping it, forcing her to look up at him.
“I am yours, Elle” he said and kissed her, his lips pressing down on hers as best as he could because he knew she wasn’t going to kiss him back, not at first anyways.
“Mmmmmmmmmm” she mumbled feeling his lips on her own, obstructing her ability to breathe.
He wished she would relax underneath his touch and maybe just maybe that was what it would take to make her understand. If she could never remember at least maybe she could understand and see that what he said was true.
Maybe she would want to give him a chance despite everything.
But the jolts kept coming, burning him like fire in his blood and then an idea sprung in his mind. Like a sole flower blooming on a crack on a terrain of concrete.
And he tried it, he had nothing left to lose.
He pulled her even closer, his hands harder on her face knowing that he hurt her a little and soon she whimpered and bit his lip.
That was Adam was waiting for.
He kissed her ever harder forcing her to open her mouth and with his tongue he made her taste his blood.
Elle tried to rid herself of the coppery taste, her face showing disgust, but Adam was too fast.
She had already swallowed a few drops and they were already doing what needed to be done, to heal, to bring back memories and return her mind and memory to its previous stage.
*********************
“Why are you silent?” Elle asked, her little blonded pigtails like rays of light around her face.
Adam smiled at his 9-year old friend.
“I am just looking at you”
“Well, stop looking at me and tell me a story. You promised me. I brought you a sandwich” little Elle complained, mentioning the sandwich as leverage.
“Ok, I will tell you a story”
“Hurray”
**********************
“How can you stand it? How can you just smile when I hear all your screams here and they make me want to kill someone?”
Elle shrugged and turned her back on him, trying to conceal he tears that threatened to make their way down her face.
“He is my father. I have no choice” she says and then turns to face him again.
“Besides, it allows me to see you, that’s a plus, isn’t it?
Adam sighs and puts his hand on her shoulder, still tiny, her 14-year-old frame still small compared to his 400-year-old one.
“Yes” he concedes. “But is it worth it?”
If her hands didn’t emit jolts before, her eyes really spilled fire now.
“How can you ask me that? You are the only worthwhile thing in my life right now. Don’t ask me to give you up”
**********************
“Your heart is beating so fast” Elle muses, the side of her head resting on Adam’s chest, both of them lying on the bed.
“And yours isn’t?” he teases her.
She crooks an eyebrow at him and laughs.
“Ok, fair enough. Seems like we have a fair deal here. I love you and you love me”
The impact of her words was nothing they both anticipated.
He sat up amazed. For a mere moment she looks older somehow. Wiser than her 16 years.
“What did you say?”
She sighs as if forced to repeat something for the 100dth time.
“I said that I love you and you love me”
“You love me?”
“Of course, I love you, don’t you?”
He looks deep into her eyes for any sign of amusement and hypocrisy, but he finds none.
“Yes, I love you, too”
“See then? It wasn’t so hard, was it?” Elle teases him as if scolding a child.
“It may be harder than you think” he replies hugging her.
***************************
“Adam!” she screams and he can hear her calling through the thick door that separates them.
“Elle? Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelle” he screams out in agony running to the door trying to get it open.
“What’s wrong? Elle?” he desperately pleads with her to talk to him some more, but all he can hear is her screams and her sobs and nothing else matters to him.
“Open the damn door! Bob, you bastard! What are you doing to her?” he shouts, his knuckles and fingers already scratched and battered and bloody from the strain of slamming against the door with all his force.
Adam doesn’t care. In a few minutes he will be alright again but what will happen to Elle?
“Elle talk to me! Elle?” he asks and this time nothing can be heard. Nothing but the thud of him falling defeated on the floor.
“I will take you away from here, baby. I swear I will save you from him, even if it’s the last thing I ever do” he swears as he watches his hand heal, dry blood the only sing that there was ever any battle, within him or outside of him.
**********************************
“This is our last chance, baby. We need to leave now. I messed with the security tape so they won’t see this coming. I have the codes to the door. Let’s go” Elle says after she opens the door to his cell.
He stands up abruptly, blind adoration in his eyes.
He follows in her footsteps as she makes her way to the corridor not bothering to check if there is someone around. She can take care of them anyways.
They stop just before the gate. Freedom a few feet away and Elle turns to look at him.
“We had been dreaming for this for months and now we can have it. Finally, my love” she says and kisses him.
He reciprocates with gratitude and passion he had bottled up for so long.
“I love you” he simply says, hoping she will understand he feels so much more but can’t properly express them.
She nods and smiles.
“I know, now run” she says as she runs to the door.
He stands up and tries to follow her too but he hears a guard.
“Here at the gate. They are getting away” the man says and he is quick to shoot at them.
“Nooooooooooooo” Adam screams and covers Elle’s body with his as they make their way out.
He is hit in the right leg and it stings but he knows he will be ok in no time.
If that had been Elle, though, it would be the end for the both of them.
“Baby!!! Are you hurt?” she yells and her eyes are filled with venom when she looks at the guard.
Blue jolts escape her hands and she is shocked when Adam pulls her away.
“He isn’t worth it, Elle. I will be fine”
“But, he hurt you” she explains and Adam is grateful for her devotion and her desire to protect him.
“Let’s go now, Elle. They can’t hurt us anymore”
******************************
“They are here! I can smell them” Elle sneers.
“I would recognize the Company stench anywhere” and she shakes both from fear and disgust.
“We need to hide, Elle. We can’t let them find us” Adam tries to reason with her, keeping her calm.
“Hide where? There’s no place safe anymore. You know that” she is close to panic and this doesn’t help their situation.
“Honey, please, stop! Everything is going to be alright” he says, his eyes intense like fires shining in the dark.
“How do you know that?” Elle starts and screams as soon as she sees the Haitian appear in the warehouse they had spent the night in.
She tries to shock him, but she can’t, her powers not working anymore.
“I know because I love you and you love me! Look at me Elle” Adam pleads and tries to catch her eyes that are frantically focused on the Haitian who calmly closes in on them with a gun in his hand.
She turns to look at him, tears in her eyes.
“Wherever you may be, I will find you. Do you understand? Even if he end up apart, I will find you and nothing they will do can ever keep me away from you. Do you trust me?” he asks her.
"I do" she nods.
“It’s time to go, Elle” the Haitian says and she tries to avoid his grip.
“And what about me?” Adam asks. “Are you gonna kill me?”
“I have no instructions to kill you. All I have to do is take Elle”
“And you always do what you are told” Adam tells him with hatred in his voice.
The Haitian remains silent for a few moments while Elle struggles inside his arms.
“She will be safe” he just says, the gun shining in his hand.
And for some reason Adam realizes he is hoping for some kind of mutual understanding.
He is not enjoying what he has to do.
If it was up to him he would leave them both here, free and unharmed.
But he is doing them a favour
The next one they would send wouldn’t be so kind or generous.
“Adam? Adam!!!!” she screams with tears in her eyes.
She doesn’t understand yet but she will.
This would be futile.
This is not the time, but the time will come and he will be ready for whatever they have in mind.
And he watches her being carried away, her hands trying desperately to find a way out of the man’s grip.
He is too strong for her though.
And Adam closes his eyes because seeing her go is the hardest sacrifice he had ever had to do.
“I will come for you baby. At least for now you will be safe” he whispers to himself.
*******************************
He searches her eyes for some kind of reassurance.
This must have worked. Memories should have come down on her like rain but there she was not moving, her eyes blank but filled with tears.
“Elle? Please say something” he implores as he lets go of her.
She blinks slowly and swallows. Her eyes focus on him and he can distinguish pain in them.
“Adam? My God, Adam?” she asks hesitantly, still dizzy.
“Yes, it’s me. Thank God, I hoped it would work” he sighs with relief, leaning down to plant soft kisses to her forehead and wipes away the blood from her lips with his fingers.
“It worked. You came back for me” she whispers to herself amazed.
“Of course, I did. You have to know I would come for you no matter where you would be”
“I know. I love you. I can’t believe they made me forget you and all this time I hurt you” she sobs bringing her hand to her mouth.
“Omg, I hurt you so much. I shocked you… I… I don’t think I ever shocked anyone any harder before”
Adam just smiled.
“Don’t worry. I am as good as new, you know that!” he reassures her, stroking her hair.
“I know but…” she starts but Adam places a finger on her lips.
“No buts, just please tell me you remember now”
“Oh, I remember everything. And I will make sure THEY never forget” she says and jolts the first guard that gets there as well as everything around her.
Everything is in flames as they make their way out. Things are exploding inside but they don't care. It could all burn down for all they cared.
They were free, there would be no one left to come after them.
And this time Adam knows it is forever.
