It's a brush-off. Trying to turn this into shop talk, instead of-

"No." He pushes the subject, "Superboy doesn't seem to realize she likes him. I don't think he knows much about girls."

Superman takes a long sip, and swallows before replying. "I suppose not." He seems to gather himself, and makes another attempt to change the subject. "Are you an expert on girls, then?"

It's awful to watch. Disillusioning. It's not that Robin thought Superman was perfect (not like Superboy still does.) He's seen the man make mistakes, seen him fail, seen him angry and hurt and mortal. But all those mistakes were honest, all those failures were well-meant. He always tries to do the right thing, to be good and fair and kind to people. Or at least, he always used to.

"Naw," Robin says. "But maybe you could give him some advice; you've got some experience, right?"

Superman shifts, and Robin thinks he's never seen the man so awkward before. It doesn't suit him well. "I don't think I'm the right person to have that kind of talk with him."

"It wouldn't have to be that talk," Robin insists. "You could just talk to him like this, about the team and how he's doing." About anything at all. Robin doesn't need any of the training Batman's given him in psychology and human behavior to read Superboy, to see just how badly his teammate wants to connect with Superman. "Even just to say 'hi.'"

Superman lets out a frustrated breath and doesn’t make eye-contact. "We don't really know each other, Robin, I don't see what the point would be."

He needs you, Robin doesn't say. "He really respects you. He'd like to get to know you."

"Leave it alone, Robin," Superman says sharply. Nothing compared with a rebuke from Batman, but from Superman it's startling.

"But I just think-"

Superman stands up and Robin feels like he's missed a jump, like he's falling and there's nothing to grab onto. "There's been a car accident on 54th and Parkway, I have to go."

Robin opens his mouth, but nothing comes out. He closes it again.

Superman sighs, looks regretful, and then turns and clasps his hand. "We'll talk again soon, alright?"

"Alright," Robin says, helplessly, and watches him leave.

Oh, oh geeze. This is just a little bit heartbreaking. I like that you do it in a quiet way, how Robin is a little uncomfortable even from the start, wondering if Superman meant it as a brush off or if he honestly didn't remember (Ouch.)...

And Superman being all sincere and caring, and making an effort, because that's what he does, except, apparently, when it comes to Superboy.

You can really feel Robin being a little bit lost here, how he doesn't know how to deal with this situation, how to make it right. Because he likes Superman, (Superman is nice) But he's kind of acting like a douche right now.

I. This is lovely. Thank you so much. I don't even care that Superboy isn't in it, this is such a wonderful piece.

There is no emoticon capable of expressing my heartbreak over star shaped sprinkles and Smallville hot chocolate.

*glows* Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it!

This, exactly. I kind of had Robin channel my own feelings about Superman and Superboy in comics.

One of the things I love most about this show so far is that it actually seems to be addressing this, as opposed to comics where I was never quite sure if the writers were just not coordinating with each other.

Oh god, so perfect. The way Clark is so nice makes it so much worse. And Robin is sat there going 'so NICE but ARGH'. All the tiny details that just highlight how much Superman is going to just pretend the situation with Kon doesn't exist.

Sobbb so lovely and so sad anon.

I tend to read anon fic memes very... tentatively because I end up feeling like I have somehow not read or watched the same source material as everyone else based on how they decided to portray the characters. But this -aahhhh it's so lovely and subtle. You characterize them so well and have a great handle on dialogue. A definite gem to read. I hope you'll be filling more prompts on here because this was a treat to read, thank you!
