“60%”

Pressing against the door Wally comes to a weak realization- he’s probably not going to get out of this one. Wheezing slightly he slumps to the ground, he’s sore from repeatedly hitting the door, he’s got a bloody nose from trying to go through the wall, and he can’t catch his breath- “59%”- because all the oxygen in the room is slowly being drained out, or at least he thinks it is anyways.

Rolling over on his back Wally stares up the ceiling. Great mission, up until there was that ambush. Next thing he knows he wakes up in this room. The lights flicker off as soon as gets to his feet and a little electronic panel right next to the door happily informs him every time the level of oxygen/air/whatever goes down a percentage. He’s in a sealed box dying because he’s breathing. And trying to escape didn’t exactly help his oxygen situation much. Wally only wishes he had been a little more useful before being caught, and selfishly he wishes that he wasn’t going to die alone. “55%”

Closing his eyes Wally tries to control his breathing, maybe he can prolong what little life he has left. It’s at 48% before he hears a noise. It takes him a moment to recognize it as his communicator- they’ve gotten way used to talking mentally. Wally’s a little light headed as he sits up and answers the communicator- “Hello?”

“KF are you okay!?” it’s Robin- funny; he was just the person that Wally wanted to talk to.

“Robin, sup,” Wally lays back down, he doesn’t want to waste energy by moving too much and he’s a little tired right now.

Robin makes a noise of frustration and in the background Wally hears the sound of bullets and something breaking. “Where the hell are you?!”

Wally has no idea, “I don’t know, a box or something,” the panel gives the percentage- 45%

“What was that?”

“Percentage till I die, what’s that in your background?”

There’s no reply for almost a minute- 40%. Wally’s never done much experimentation with oxygen in a box but he has a feeling that whoever built made it so that he’d have plenty of time to reflect before he died. It’s kind of annoying. “What does your box look like?”

“White, boxy, there’s possibly a one way mirror somewhere. Pretty empty though,” Wally doesn’t bother looking around, he’d done that earlier, back when the percent was in the 90’s.

For a while all Wally hears is Robin cursing, then the communicator cuts off. 38% and Wally starts to wonder if it’s actual oxygen level or if it’s just the amount of air he has left to breath before he passes out from lack of breathable air. The second one makes more sense and Wally feels momentarily proud of himself, 37%. Of course, knowing that doesn’t change much. His communicator buzzes again and he answers it, “KF, how much time do you have?!”

Wally does a few quick calculations, or he tries to but gives up after a few moments, “A few minutes I guess. Hey Robin, what happened back there?”

There’s a second before Robin replies, “We were split up. It was a trap and we walked right into it,” there’s another pause, “I should’ve seen it,” and Robin sounds…bitter.

“We all should’ve seen it,” Wally’s about to say ‘no harm done’ but he’s locked in a room probably about to die, so he stays silent- 33%

“Hey KF…”

“Yeah?”

“I’m going to get you out of this, alright?”

It’s sort of funny, Wally’s already calculated his chances of survival and they’re pretty damn low. The compound they infiltrated is so huge and empty that the chances of Robin finding him are below ten percent, and the chances he’ll be alive still, a little less than five percent. “If you say so, odds ain’t all that good though.”

“You’ve beaten them before, haven’t you?”

One in a billion, way less than one percent and he still lived. Wally almost wants to say that lightning doesn’t strike twice but he’s proof that it does. “Hey Rob…”

“You shouldn’t talk,” Robin almost sounds worried.

29%. “Hey, thought you said I’d be fine. I can talk if I want.”

“Fine, make it qu-“ there’s a loud noise and then static, Robin doesn’t finish what he was saying.

“Robin?” Wally sits up, “Rob?” still no answer-25%- “Dick?” he tries weakly.

Nothing, he’s alone again. Wally lays there for a minute- 21%- and comes to a realization. He’s not going to die sitting down. Dragging himself to his feet Wally goes to wall opposite of the door, turns and presses his back against it. He takes a deep breath and then launches himself as fast as he can at the door. A loud smack sounds as he slams against it, managing to build enough speed to shake the door, but it doesn’t open. It’s electronically sealed so no matter how hard he throws himself at it, it won’t open. Still Wally turns and stumbles his way back to the opposite wall, he again turns and runs into the door. He repeats this three times before the spots in his vision force him to stop- 12%.

Slumping against the door Wally tries to catch his breath, he doesn’t want to die. He wants to live and run some more. He wants to eat M’gann’s burnt cookies and then help her make better ones. He wants to argue with Artemis again because as much as he complains she’s pretty cool. He wants to drag Supey out to different places and show him there are things better than Superman and his approval. He wants to have Kaldur give him those swim lessons he was promised after nearly drowning. He wants to go to Roy’s and force him to relax. He wants to see Robin again. He wants to talk to him. Wally wants so much just to talk to Robin again.

Gritting his teeth Wally forces himself to stand up and he walk back to the wall, it might not be doing anything but it’s better than sitting still. When he hits the door it’s even harder not to pass out- 6%.He struggles to stand, he’s probably got enough for one last try. Wally makes it to the other wall, exhausted he leans against it trying to gather his strength- 5%. Taking a deep breath Wally pushes off, “WALLY!” only to trip and fall as Robin’s voice blares through his mind.

“Robin!” Wally rolls onto his back, “What the hell happened!?!”

There’s a pause, “I was distracted. M’gann helped point me in your direction. Are you feeling okay KF? We could hear you slamming against the door from down the hall,” there’s a definite tinge of worry.

Wally blinks- 3%- “I feel really…tired? Rob where you at?” he asks slowly.

“Hacking your door as we think, try not to be whelmed when I beat your odds,” Robin sound’s nervous and worried but there’s a bit of smugness that makes Wally smile a little.

“Sure,” 1%, “Can I tell you something quick?”

“What?”

“I really-“ 0%, there’s a second where Wally takes his last breath and he holds it, the words in his mind come spilling out quickly and he’s putting as much emotion as he can into his words- they might be his last after all, “I really, really like you. Not just in the sense of friends but past that. I love you.”

For one dizzying second Wally realizes that he’s actually confessed. Then he realizes the dizziness might be because of the lack of air and he goes for another breath only to find that there’s nothing to breath. Fun, the box is a vacuum now, must’ve happened while he was spilling his guts out. There’s a sudden panicky moment where Wally’s trying to breath and he realizes that he’s probably going to die. He’s not exactly sure what happens next but the next thing he knows he’s blinking back spots as he stares up at the ceiling. “Wally? Are you…alright?”

It’s M’gann that asks that. And as his vision comes into focus he sees her standing there, looking down at him in nothing but concern. Wally smiles at her weakly, “Have I ever told you that you take my breath away, beautiful?”

There’s a sharp pain in his stomach as Artemis hits him- hard. “We’re all worried and that’s all you’ve got to say!?” she snaps.

Superboy’s helping him to sit up and Wally’s trying to catch his bearings. Artemis is scowling off to his right, M’gann is smiling at him and right behind her Kaldur is looking at him in concern. So where’s Robin? He turns to his left and Robin’s sitting there calmly, his face mostly impassive. For a moment they look at each other, “So what were you saying?”

Wally blinks owlishly, “Um…what?”

“Towards the end, we…” Robin pauses- and Wally suddenly realizes that his conversation might’ve been broadcasted to the others and not JUST Robin- “M’gann couldn’t hold on and you were cut off at the end. What were you saying?”

Robin sounds genuinely curious and honest and Wally realizes that his newest attempt at confessing didn’t work. “N-nothing. Just,” Wally says the first thing that comes to mind, “I was whelmed is all, was just talking nonsense.”

Before Robin can respond to that Wally stands up. Blood rushes to his head and for a moment he’s close to falling back down but Robin’s at his side to steady him. The rest of team are there too, and as soon as Wally is ready they start walking back to the Bioship. None of them are in a hurry- the compound’s been evacuated or beaten up so their route is clear and at the moment there’s a comfortable companionship around them. Near death experiences do that- make everyone closer because you realize how close you were to losing something important. Wally glances down at his hand, Robin holding it, leading him down the hall and has yet to let go-a warm feeling bubbles up. Hiding his smile Wally quickly looks away, only to turn and see M’gann looking at him in such a guilty way that his curiosity can’t help but be enticed.

“Something wrong gorgeous?” he asks hesitantly- just a hunch that she had yet to leave his mind.

M’gann hesitates and glances at the others- no one is really paying attention to them. “I am so sorry Wally. I…you were still connected at the end. I was just so surprised by the emotion that I…accidentally cut you off…from Robin.”

There’s a second where Wally processes that information. He’d confessed…Robin just hadn’t heard it, “W-was it just you!?”

At this M’gann glances subtly at Superboy, alright- so that’s two- and then she nods towards Kaldur- o-okay, that’s three- the worst is when she also looks at Artemis. “A-all of them?” he squeaks.

“Y-yes…”

Wally’s face turns a brilliant red. He’d confessed in front of his whole team…and the only one who didn’t hear it was the only one who was supposed to hear it. There’s suddenly a playful voice in his head, “Don’t worry Wally,” Artemis turns and smirks at him, “You’re secret’s safe with us.”

It is official, life hates him.
