“Rain again?”
“Mhmm.”
Wally groaned and fell into a chair, seating himself in a table right across from Dick, who seemed to be free to goof off, seeing as no one was around.
“Surprised that a rush of people haven’t come in yet,” Dick hummed, casually wiping the counters clean with a wet rag. “They usually come in by the dozens when a downpour like this happens.”
“Well no one’s out on the streets in rain like this.”
“Seems so.”
The grin that lit up both their faces was enough to send chills down Connor’s back, who was working in the back.
“You know what that means?” Wally asked, grin outrageously large and dorky.
“Oh yeah.”
“Book Fort!” The two proclaimed in the unison, Wally already heading for the library, and Dick swiftly jumping over the counter and following the older boy.
-x-
“I think we’ve out-done ourselves.”
“A little bit too much.”
The tower of books stacked precariously against each other stood at about at least 6 feet, way over Dick’s head, and began to lean oddly to left.
“C’mon! I planned this whole awesome cave system!”
“Wally, I don’t think-“
Dick watched Wally disappeared into the tower of books, and could only roll his eyes and smile as he followed Wally into the fragile building.
“Holy crap! Dick, hurry up you have got to see this.”
“What is it-“
Dick answered his own question as he entered the small pocket of space that Wally had strategically built, and looked up, a small skylight in the roof to flood the space with light.
Wally was leaning upwards on his knees in an attempt to fix the makeshift skylight and Dick was given a (lovely) peek of Wally’s surprisingly well-toned abdomen by the other’s slowly hiking shirt. Dick actually had originally imagined Wally to be scrawny, seeing as how Wally seemed to be an honors student, from all the time he spent studying and what-not, but it wasn’t like Dick was complaining.
Not that it mattered.
Because it totally didn’t.
Dick pressed himself back against a wall of books and felt it shift behind him. He had a feeling that wasn’t supposed to happen.
“Oh fu-“
The fort came down in an avalanche-like fashion, gravity dragging all of the books in their direction. Dick gave a shriek as the avalanche rapidly headed his way and Wally was engulfed in the sea of books.
A collection of dust settled as the avalanche did, and Wally’s head peeked out from a pile of particularly old hard covers.
“Ugh… Dick? Dick, where are you?”
A familiar groan surfaced along with the person who it belonged to. Dick surfaced from under a pile of romance and sci-fi novels, an open book placed on top of head and his sunglasses askew.
“I hate you, I will be in pain for days.”
“It’s not that bad-“
“Wally. They all landed…” Dick’s cheeks burned hotly as he raised a hand to fix his sunglasses, but Wally didn’t miss the way his hand trembled. “… there.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Oh.”
“Haha… no hard feelings, right? Haha… hey hold on… Dick-put that hard cover down Dick, put it down! That is a dangerous weapon in your-“
Wally’s screams filled the café, and Dick would’ve been convinced it was music to his ears.
