Prompt Post - Part Ten

Mar 11, 2012 17:03

I am REALLY, REALLY SORRY about taking so long, guys, and about not being around much recently. I've been busier than I have in a while, and it just kept slipping my mind between uni applications and volunteering and all sorts- for some reason I thought we were much further off a new post.

If there is anything I haven't responded to, as of now, I'm ( Read more... )

This Isn't Kindness – 7 anonymous March 21 2012, 07:56:27 UTC
"It started slow," Billy found himself saying, distantly. "First it was just coughing. It was kind of hard to breathe sometimes. I felt really achy in the mornings. But...I thought it was just dust in my room or something." He paused, feeling a lump suddenly forming in the back of his throat. "It wasn't so bad. Really, it wasn't. I didn't - I didn't think it was going to get worse..."

"It always gets worse, if you don't take care of it," Nightwing said, quietly. He walked back to the side of the bed, and stared down at Billy calmly. "Doesn't matter what the problem is. And of course you didn't have any way of fighting it. You're homeless, aren't you?"

Billy started. He hadn't meant to reveal that much to this stranger. Was it that obvious? "I - uh," he said, panicking again. "No, I just - I live with my, um, foster parents? They work really late, so - "

"Save it, Billy. I'm a detective," Nightwing said, sounding almost amused. But he quickly sobered up again at the look of panic he received in return. "Yeah, I know your name. I can explain everything later. But, just listen to me for a sec.

"I haven't told the doctors anything so far. All they know is that I found you passed out from sickness. They're definitely suspicious of where you came from, but if you're willing to play along, I'll do everything I can to keep you from getting mixed up in the foster care system. I won't let them send you off to someone who would mistreat you." He paused. "But I'm not sending you out on the streets alone to die again. Not even Captain Marvel can save you from starvation."

Billy swallowed. "I wasn't dying, sir."

Nightwing's voice was blunt. "You're nearly ten pounds underweight, kid. That IV is in your arm isn't medicine - it's there to feed you. The doctors said it was a miracle that your immune system managed to fight off the infection as long as it did. If you try and run, to fend for yourself any longer - you are going to die."

Billy sighed, staring down into his lap. So much had changed recently, and yet at the end of the day he still felt so constantly exhausted, and hungry. Even lonely. His parents hadn't left him much, but they'd instilled in him a steadfast sense of optimism, a belief that things would get better if he worked hard. Was this the sign he'd been waiting for?

Meeting the wizard Shazam, becoming Captain Marvel, had made Billy happy. It had brought purpose to his life, however difficult. But his life wasn't a guaranteed thing anymore, was it? Tonight had proven that.

He just wanted to help people.

"...What do you need me to do?" Billy asked softly.

Unexpectedly, a hand reached down to affectionately ruffle his hair. "Tell me, kid," Nightwing asked lightly. Deviously. "Have you ever ridden a motorcycle before?"

Because even flying isn't better than riding Dick's RNight-cycle.

Nightwing is amazingly in character. Oh, Billy, Nightwing's not going to let you get mixed up in the social services system again. He's been there. He knows how bad it gets. Hell, they sent him to juvie because they couldn't find a foster home for him.

He'll take care of you.

I SHALL WAIT PATIENTLY FOR AN UPDATE!

wait wait wait when did Dick Grayson go to juvie

did I miss something

I mean I'll be the first to admit I'm no canon expert on him but seriously I'd have thought that would have come up at some point in my research

how did I not know this

(also hee thank you for the kind words, I'll update as frequently as I can)

iirc, in comics canon Dick was sent to Juvie after his parents died because all the social services was full he proceeded to get beaten up a couple of times before he was sent to a catholic orphanage where Bruce found him sometimes later.

ah okay that makes waaaaaaaay more sense thank you

I haven't read the comics for the most part but I tried to at least get enough background information to write convincingly. apparently most sites just skip straight to the part where he gets adopted by Bruce and lives happily ever after...HOW HELPFUL OF THEM

np! The Batman wiki ( http://batman.wikia.com/wiki/Batman_Wiki ) is a wonderful resource if you're ever in need of character info. :D It's were I usually end up going most the time when I'm reading comics and come across something I haven't heard about or don't understand. ^_^

Well, it happens in only one continuity, so I'm not really surprised most people don't know about it. Bruce was going through all the paperwork related to taking in a ward, which was difficult given his playboy reputation and apparently back then, taking in a ward involved a lot more hassle than it does now. During that time, Dick got passed around social service, they couldn't find space for him in a foster home, so they put an eight year-old (or ten; not really sure how old he was in that continuity when he lost his parents. I mean, he was twelve in All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder) in juvie. (Makes for a lot of interesting, and frankly terrible, possibilities as to what can happen to a cute little orphan boy in the same cell as a bunch of convicted 15/16 year-olds.) Yes, that was clearly better than him living with a certified playboy.

After sorting through the legal issues, it took Bruce some time again to find him. This backstory of Dick's isn't very well-publicized; my theory is that they're regretting coming up with it in the first place. Seriously, Dick was an innocent child.

Gigantuous Dick Grayson fan here; if he were real I'd be a stalker, but even I discovered this fact from this meme, and then I found it in the comics.

So if you're following that continuity, you can see why he would try so hard to help a kid with nowhere to go; he knows exactly how bad it can get, on the streets, because he's been a hero in Gotham far too long to not know, and also in the government's child care system, because he's been through the worst of it.

b-baaaaw oh Dick you poor thing. come here and let me hug you.

(although that whole backstory actually sounds remarkably similar to Billy Batson's in the DC Animated Showcase that had him and Superman in it. although instead of juvie he was sent to a home for "troubled children" before he ended up on the streets.)

anyway yes NO MORE STREET SUFFERING you both have homes now okay, okay, everyone hug and be happy ;;

Eh, DC doesn't always get points for creativity.

Exhibit A:
Dick Grayson's mother? Mary Grayson.
Wally West's mother? Mary West.
Bruce Wayne's mother? Martha Wayne
Clark Kent's mother? Martha Kent

And do we really need to go into all the John/J'onn/Jon(s)?

I think the YJ show actually made a joke out of all the Johns. Or I took it as one lol
