He’s stupid and dumb and pathetic and he never should’ve-

Bruce is dying.

“I don’t care, just save him, I’ll do anything, he’s the only one left, I'll make the stupid contract-”

His voice breaks with his resolve.Bruce is angry with him when he finds out. Because he finds out. He always does. Artemis is there, too, and she’s quiet, ominously quiet, as she watches father and son.

“I couldn’t lose you!”

“Well, you lost.”

He’s careful with what he does after that-he falls, further and further into a despair but he’s a knight now, and he battles the enemies that Bruce can’t see, and there’s-

Well, there’s tears, and he’s off balance and sleepless and Artemis thinks she understands but she doesn’t, and he’s not part of a team anymore, it’s just him, just a fourteen-year-old boy who goes by Nightwing and carries regrets but doesn’t know if he regrets anything. It happens when he sees the new boy die.

Not when he sees the new boy. Even though he knows, he knows when he sees Jason Todd that there’s going to be a new member of Young Justice, that there will be a Robin to replace him. It’s when Jason dies; because now Dick is Nightwing, and Nightwings don’t just let Robins die, that’s like breaking fifty different unwritten contracts, so Nightwing sweeps in and he tries to save him but he fails, and he’s out of Grief Seeds, too, so this is it. This is really, truly, it.

Jason comes back but two Robins die, in a flash of colors and textures in a void space, and Artemis is the one to see the Flying Grayson’s last, cryptic performance.

This. I never saw the full anime, just the second half, when every dark horrible thing is revealed, and everything seems futile and hopeless.

This feels just like that. And you just had to pick Robin and Artemis - and Jade, poor Jade. They were the perfect choices. And of course he'd wish it to save Bruce. Damn it, all I want now is a Homura Wally to follow Dick through time forever (Flashes always fuck with time and space - it could happen!)
