Artemis and Wally didn’t get along well. There were a great deal of things that they disagreed on and that set them on the war path against each other in the form of arguments. Despite growing up surrounded by criminals Artemis had a surprisingly strong belief dreams in magic. She was a half full kind of person. Wally, on the other hand, lacked a belief in dreams and magic. He was cynical and always seemed to see the world as half empty. He once told her that ‘if you want something to happen then you have to force it to happen.’

It surprised her, seeing as Wally came from a normal family, that he was so negative. Especially when the Flash seemed so laid back and positive. Family didn’t necessarily have to share the same personality traits though… she was a prime example. Then again there was a chance that Wally wasn’t even related to the Flash… yet again she was a prime example seeing as she wasn’t related to Green Arrow.

She and Wally had found one thing that they had in common though. When they were angry they trained or sparred. They’d rather hit something than talk about what made them angry. It was a common trait that they’d figured out within the first few weeks of being teammates. Artemis had been working out in the gym, letting off steam from her encounter with some of the rich, snobbish brats at the academy when Wally walked in.

He offered to spar with her. She accepted. Wally refrained from using his speed to dodge, opting to work on his defensive blocking, as she swung at him in controlled rage. Unlike his usual goofy attitude though, he was completely serious. It wasn’t until all of her annoyance and frustration was out that she questioned him.

“How’d you know that would help?”

“It helps me so I thought I’d take a chance and see if it helped you. I could have been wrong… Rob prefers to talk.” Wally answered.

She contemplated that for a minute before smiling.

“Thanks.”

“No problem.”

That was how it started. Anytime that the other seemed agitated in some way they invited the other to a spar. It was a silent understanding. Neither was very good at talking, but the relief of pent up stress was evident to both of them.

By the end of the third month working alongside one another with the team they came up with a new tradition. Once a week they had a competition in one of the training rooms. Different simulations that tested their particular skills against one another. They both trained till near exhaustion, but the feeling was satisfying.

There was this one time though… it unsettled her.

Since she’d joined the team there were these moments when Wally simply got quieter for short periods of time. After Kent Nelson died Wally was still very much himself… when you went up to him and talked. That was the problem though… you had to seek him out to have him talk to you rather than Wally coming around to hang out. It happened again after the Failsafe exercise and after Artemis told him about Miss Martian and Superboy. Wally didn’t avoid them, but he didn’t seek anyone out either.
