Jason Todd woke to a quiet murmur.

“It starts with the little things, misplaced items mostly. Missing keys, socks turning up in the weirdest places-and I did lose my homework that one time. Eventually, it becomes something serious. Remember Felipe Garzonas?”

Only Spoiler’s eyewitness account had saved him from being accused of murder. As it was, Batman reviewed the footages for several days before shaking his head and concluding that Felipe had ‘slipped’. It had been a tense time, difficult for Tim who was torn between supporting him and his faith in cold, hard logic. He grimaced in reply, shuddering when he found that he had been left unrestrained.

“Yeah” Red Hood chuckled, as though sensing his thoughts. “It always starts small but it won’t stay that way. You say you love your family, how long do you think you can protect them from yourself?”

“What are you saying?” Blue Jay croaked, his mouth parched. Red Hood offered him a splash of water from a nondescript bottle and he drank it down eagerly, running his tongue over his lips seeking moisture.

“Look kid, I don’t know you. I know you came from Crime Alley, I know chilidog is your favorite food. Maybe you’re lucky. Probably not. Fate is a harsh mistress and we of the multiverses drew the short straw. We are a certainty-ask the Pretender if you can’t figure it out. We’re going to die.”

“That’s your advice?” He parroted incredulously. “Die?”

Red Hood shrugged. “From what I understand from the geektalk, the world needs us dead. You’re alive so the world’s trying to buck you out of time.”

“And if I don’t. Die?”

Red Hood studied him for a moment. “Consider this a lesson from an older and wiser you. There will be a time when you’re alone, your brothers can’t find you, your sisters gone, and Batman one second too late. When that happens, you have no one but yourself to rely on, do you understand? If you want to live, fight. And when they stop trusting you, when they stop loving you, remember this. ”

Blue Jay’s eyes went wide behind his mask, mouth parted in a wordless cry as Red Hood pushed in the broken rib with his thumb, cruelly grinding it in when he could elicit no sound. In desperation, Blue Jay’s hand shot out and grabbed him by his collar, dragging him close, his fingers curling into the seams. “Is that what happened to you?”
