Batman and the Flock 14/? hinn_raven March 9 2012, 04:28:53 UTC
Earth 1

Damian watched Todd, a scowl fixed on his face. The man was currently in the middle of a workout regimen of sorts, and Damian was annoyed. This Todd confused him, and the youngest Wayne did not like that.

The real Jason Todd was simple and easy to figure out. A fallen hero turned murderer, who was a danger to Damian, his family, and the city that his family had sworn to protect. Yes, Father and Grayson felt guilt about how Todd had become a criminal, but Damian wasn’t bothered by that. Even the small shrine to the boy Todd had been, in the corner of the Batcave, didn’t really mean anything to Damian, except that the man was even more dangerous than many of their enemies.

And he didn’t see how that would change, even if this Todd was a dimension traveler.

“You just going to stare all day Babybird?” Todd called out, still staring at the ceiling as he held the heavy weight in place above his torso.

Damian’s lips curled into his best disdainful sneer. “Don’t call me that ridiculous nickname,” he said, doing his best to imitate his father’s icy tone.

Todd seemed amused by this, and set down the weight, slipping out from underneath it and turning to face Damian, resting his elbows on his knees. “Didn’t answer my question,” he said, smiling in a manner that reminded Damian of one of the few pictures of Todd in the house. Most had been hidden away by Father after Todd’s death, but a handful had been spared, notably the ones in the man’s old room.

Damian glowered, crossing his arms. Todd laughed, getting up and moving over to the punching bag, starting to spar with it.

“Sloppy,” Damian sneered as Todd started to attack the inanimate object, his form off.

Todd laughed again. “Not used to targets standing still. I’ve been on the move for a few months-there hasn’t been much time to train.”
“Why’ve you been on the move?” Damian said, eyes narrowed. That seemed suspicious to him.

“My team and I have been in Europe,” Todd said, getting the hand of the fight. Now that he was in the groove, Damian had to admit that the man was clearly skilled in hand to hand combat. It was similar to the Red Hood’s fighting style in many ways, albeit much less vicious. “We’ve been tracking down the League of Shadows, with the help of Cheshire.”

“Why would Cheshire help you?” Damian asked, incredulous. He’d never had the misfortune to meet the assassin, but he’d read reports, heard stories, and even briefly met her daughter, and knew that the woman was hardly the type to help heroes.

“They tried to make her kill Lian,” Todd said simply, smirking at him. “Not their brightest idea. Anyways, we’ve been bouncing around Europe for two months. Shadows don’t stay nearly this still.” As if to prove this point, he delivered a roundhouse kick to the punching bag.

“Who’s on your team?” Damian asked, a bit curious despite himself. He was the son of the World’s Greatest Detective, after all.

Todd paused in his exercise, looking at Damian with a smile. “Troia. Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern. Ravager. Starfire. Red Arrow, even though he pretends he’s not on the team.”

“How’d you end up with that band of misfits?” Damian asked, slightly confused as to why Todd had a bunch of Titans on his team.

“It’s a bit of a long story, Babybird,” Todd said. “But I’ll tell it if you want.”

The two Jason's are really interesting to write. The problem is finding a logical way for canon!Batman to let it happen.

All the things I love about this are legion, but there are a few that really stick out. Tim and Jason's little talk was really interesting and the tension between them was just right. I love Jason's interactions with Damian too. Will we get to hear the story of how Jason's team came to be?

And the 1984 reference. Poor Strays!Jason is missing his family. So perfect.

I also really, really like the little comment about who belongs to who in the family. It captures the complexity of such such a large family and hints at how they all have unique relationships with one another.

All in all this was just fantastic. As usual.

(P.S. I also am looking forward to the two Jasons meeting. As for how, what was canon Jason even doing at this point? Hmm...)

The tension probably stemmed more from my own frustration at writing that scene than any ability on my part. It took me forever, and was incredibly difficult to write.

Canon!Jason is currently in Arkahm, purely because I want to be able to have Joker Blog references at one point. (Have you ever seen that?)

I suppose that's possible, but it still turned out quite well.

(Although now I want Tim mentioning the fact that Damian also tried to kill him and Strays!Jason just wanting to bundle him up and protect him from everything. Have I mentioned that Jason is horribly overprotective of Tim? It becomes a source of tension and character development between them, actually, since Tim is the most independent of the Flock... Can you tell I'm excited to get to the part of Strays where Tim is secure enough for Jason's over-protectiveness to be stifling?)

I have not seen the Joker Blog, though now I'm curious. Link?

Jason being overprotective of canon!Tim would be hilarious. I'll see if I can fit that in.

I can see Jason as being overprotective of all of his siblings, really. Even Cass, who can kick his ass eight ways to Tuesday.

As for the Joker Blogs...

Now all I can imagine Damian is as a curious little cat. He's all "TELL ME MORE" while acting nonchalant and uncaring.
