“There you are,” he said, trying to hide the relief in his tone. He took in Nightwing’s appearance, and then said, with incredulity, “What, you had time to change from blue to red, and not time to answer me? Damn, Dickie-bird. I’m kinda hurt.”
“Jason,” Nightwing said shortly - he almost spat out the name. Tercel was taken aback by the vehemence and suspicion laced into Nightwing’s tone. “You know you can’t just drop into Gotham like this anymore. Not after all that you’ve done.”
“What?”
“Don’t play innocent! Damn it, Jason,” Nightwing said. “How many times do we have to go through this?” Gesturing sharply to the bow that Tercel gripped tightly in one hand, he ordered, “Disarm yourself, Jason. There’s no way I’m talking to you with a weapon in your hand. Not after last time.”
Tercel’s bewilderment was starting to give way to anger, the need for self-defence rising. “Like hell I-“ Tercel instinctively raised his hands in a defensive position.
Which, as it turns out, was the wrong idea.
Nightwing sprang, escrima sticks a blur. It was all Tercel could do to block the strikes, squashing down the innate wrongness of this - that the world had gone mad, becauce he and Nightwing shouldn’t be hurting each other.
They were siblings, and they were the two oldest, so of course he and Dickface had fought. They’d thrown things at each other and yelled at one another from across the room whenever their arguments got too heated. Then there were the mock-fights, the training grounds. But never, ever had Dick raised a hand to him and meant it to hurt, meant it to bring him down and keep him down.
Which was why he was completely unprepared for the blow to the head.
