When Past and Present Collide - Pt. 1a anonymous November 17 2011, 04:32:44 UTC
~~~
"Dude, what are we supposed to do now?!"
"We cannot simply leave our friend to the mercy of this madmad!"
"We need to get out there and kick every bad guy butt until they start talking!"
"Everyone just needs to calm down," Raven said softly, capturing the attention of her three arguing team-mates.
"How can we remain calm when Slade had captured our leader?!" Starfire demanded, throwing her hands up with a wild gesture.
"Because if one of us was captured, Robin would not panic," Raven replied as monotonously as ever, "He would remain calm and devise a strategy."
"Okay...then what's the first thing Robin would do?" Beast Boy asked, his green eyes flashing with worry and impatience as he shifted his weight from side to side.
"First, he'd find out who took us. Then he would find out where and why we were taken..." Raven replied.
"Well, know the 'who' part," Cyborg added, "But the question now is why."
"Remember what Slade right before he disappeared with Robin?" Raven asked. The other three nodded, their brows furrowed in puzzlement.
"Perhaps we should send out a distress signal? See if any other Titans can make sense of Slade's words?" Starfire suggested after a moment of tense silence. Raven sighed, clearly not liking the idea of involving the others but then nodded in agreement.
"Maybe only the closest Titans?" Beast Boy asked, stepping forward, "A sudden gathering of teen heroes would probably attract too much attention."
"All right, I'll send out a scan for the closest signals from the communicators..." Cyborg said, pulling up a holographic map of the United States and typing away at the keyboard. There was a few minutes of quiet buzzing before a red dot appeared on the computer screen, beeping loudly.
"Central City?" Starfire announced as she read the blinking dot's basic location.
"Aww, man! Why'd it have to be him?!" Beast Boy grumbled, flopping back on the couch with a frown, "Every time he comes here, he eats all my food!"
"Something about speedster metabolism," Raven replied with a light shrug, "But he's known Robin longer than we have. If anyone can make sense of this, it's probably him." Raven pulled her communicator from her belt before Beast Boy could protest further, turning her attention back towards the computer screen.
"Raven calling Kid Flash." The four teens waited in silence, getting only a crackle of static before a cheerful voice, almost obnoxiously happy, responded to their call.
"Kid Flash here!"
"Kid Flash, this is Raven. We need-"
"Well, hey there, beautiful! Finally reconsidering that date? I knew you wouldn't be able to resist the Wall-man's charm for long!" Raven sighed in exasperation, rubbing her temples with her free hand.
"This is a very serious matter, Kid Flash." Cyborg added into his own communicator.
"So you need my ingenius exper-?"
"Robin's been captured."
For the first time since they'd met him Kid flash was silent and Raven started to wonder if he'd hung up on them.
"So why call me?" Kid Flash finally said a few moments later, the sudden cheerfulness in his voice all but gone, "We went our seperate ways years ago."
"But you're still friends, aren't you?!" Beast Boy snapped over Raven's shoulder. "Robin needs your help!" Starfire floated over to him, setting her hand on his shoulder to soothe the angry shape-shifter.
"Oh please...He hasn't need us in years." Kid Flash replied bitterly. Raven narrowed her eyes; there had always been an icy silence between Robin and Kid Flash whenever the speedster visited Jump City, but she'd never given much thought to it.
"Us?" Cyborg repeated, exchanging a confused glance with the rest of his team-mates, "Who is 'us'?"
"The people he used to call his teammates," Kid Flash said, his tone telling him that he now was on the verge of hanging up.
"Kid Flash, one more thing!" Starfire interjected before he could cut the conversation off, "Slade said something strange when he took Robin - maybe you will understand the meaning behind his words?"
"All right, fine...What did Slade say?"
"He said...that it was time for Robin to see the light..." Starfire replied uncertainly, hoping it would make more sense to him.
"...."
"Kid Flash? Are you...still there?"
"I'll be there in five. We're going to need some help."
When Kid Flash said "Be there in five," the Titans had expected five minutes, not five seconds. Before Cyborg had even shut the Tower's computer off Kid Flash had zipped into room, demanding answers.
Twenty tense minutes later, once Kid Flash had finally run out of questions, the four remaining Titans stood in silence, waiting as the speedster sighed and ran a hand through his bright red hair.
"Should we call Batman?" Starfire asked, eager to help, "Perhaps he can-"
"No!" Kid Flash said, flinching when it came out with more force than he'd expected, "If Batman gets word of this, he'll have all our heads!"
"Well then...who's gonna help us?" Beast Boy asked with a frown.
"It'll be easier to get to Gotham, so we'll head there and pick up an old friend before we go to Atlantis."
"Atlantis?" Cyborg repeated, "What's, or rather, who is in Atlantis?"
"Kaldur'ahm, known as Aqualad at one point."
"I thought Garth was-?"
"After Kaldur went into his little self-exile, Garth took up the Aqualad mantle," Kid Flash interrupted, the bitter tone in his voice momentarily returning, "But Kaldur used to be our team's leader, and we'll need him if we want Superboy to join us."
"Is Superboy on bad terms with you all?" Starfire asked up as Cyborg led them to the hanger, where the T-Ship was located. Kid Flash sighed heavily, glancing at them over his shoulder.
"We're all on bad terms..." he muttered, "Except for Superboy and Miss Martian."
"Miss Martian?" Starfire asked again, hovering beside Kid Flash.
"Another old team-mate of ours," Kid Flash replied, smiling as a few memories flashed through his mind, "But more importantly, Superboy's girlfriend. She's pretty much the only person he'll listen to, but we still need Kaldur because she won't convince Superboy to join us if he refuses."
"Wow...you guy sound like quite the team..." Beast Boy muttered with a roll of his eyes. Kid Flash whirled around to face him, eyes flashing in anger.
"You don't know anything about what we went through!" he growled, causing Beast Boy to take a hasty step back.
"He didn't mean anything by that, Kid Flash," Raven said, her glare daring Beast Boy to contradict her. Kid Flash turned away, taking a long breathe to calm himself.
"So, who's in Gotham anyway?" Cyborg asked as they loaded into the T-Ship, feeling eager to diffuse the sudden flare on tension.
"Artemis Crock," Kid Flash replied as he buckled himself in, "If anyone can find the trail of the guys who took Robin, it's her."
Ahhh this is awesome! You've merged the two universes pretty well so far, I can't wait to see where this goes! It's sad to hear how strained the relationships have become on the YJ team though, I hope they'll be able to patch things up by the end.
Robin could not recall his head ever hurting this much.
He wasn't sure where he was - a warehouse, or some sort of cell judging by the cold cement floor and faint stench of rust in the air. His belt was gone, his arms bound behind his back, and he was pretty sure both of his ankles had been broken.
How could he have fallen into such an obvious trap? He rarely let Slade bait him anymore, preferring to defeat the mercenary as quickly as he could and get his team back to the safety of their Tower.
But then, Slade had mentioned her, and Robin lost control of his temper. Letting his fist and Birdarangs fly, Robin had been running on pure anger and andreneline, which was what had allowed Slade to capture him so easily.
"Let him go, Slade!" Beast Boy snarled before phasing into a lion, baring his sharp fangs. Cyborg and Starfire stood on both sides of the shape-shifter, reading to blast Slade into oblivion.
"Afraid I can't do that," Slade had replied, "It's high time for Robin to see the Light."
The Light...
Robin had thought his days fighting against the Light were over. It had been a battle he did not remember fondly or with triumph, as it cost them one of his best friends. Yeah, they'd won, but the aftermath of burying a friend broke his team apart, sending them all on their seperate ways.
Aqualad had offically disbanded the team that same night, and no one had objected. Kid Flash had went back to Central City to resume his role as Flash's partner. Superboy and Miss Martian took off together, though Robin never bothered to ask where they went. Aqualad went back to Atlantis, and Artemis presumably returned to Gotham.
"Has he said anything yet?" Slade's voice suddenly said somewhere behind him. Robin tensed up, slowly turning his head to hear better. His temples throbbed in protest but Robin tried to ignore it, choking down the bile that threatened to come up.
"Hasn't done anything but lie there and drool...I think you hit him too hard." Robin narrowed his eyes behind his torn mask, almost gasping when he recognized the speaker; Sportsmaster. But rather than stop to wonder why the two mercenaries were standing in the same room, Robin opted to focus his attention of their conversation.
"You underestimate him, Sportsmaster," Slade replied cooly, almost sounding proud of the Boy Wonder's stamina. It made Robin feel sicker.
"Yeah, just like you're underestimating his team if you think they won't find us." Sportsmaster replied with a hint of humor.
"I can handle the Teen Titans well enough." Sportsmaster outright laughed this time, almost causing Robin to flinch and reveal his consciousness.
"I'm not talking about the Titans, Slade." Both Robin and Slade narrowed their eyes in confusion, though Robin realized who Sportsmaster was referring to long before Slade did.
"The covert ops team? They disbanded years ago," Slade scoffed, stating what Robin was thinking.
"Not once they get word of this," Sportsmaster said, and Robin knew the masked man was pointing towards his seemingly unconscious form.
"You think they'll come after us?" Slade asked, sounding more curious than worried.
"You haven't met Artemis yet," Sportsmaster chuckled again, not noticing when Robin lightly flinched at the mention of his old team-mates name, "She'd follow you into Hell if it means getting Robin back."
'No, she won't', Robin thought bitterly, his eyes sliding shut again. Artemis wasn't looking for or interested in saving them. None of his old team-mates were. Not after what they'd gone through.
Not that Robin blamed them.
Did Zatanna die? Or was there someone else on the team we don't know about?
What's more important is: was it Robin's fault somehow (another suicide mission)? He seems pretty positive his old friends wouldn't come to save him. He wouldn't think that unless he thinks they don't care, when one teammate dying is actually reason for them to care more.
"Whoa...This is where Robin lives?" Beast Boy asked, looking around as the dark city known as Gotham. Dark storm clouds loomed over the gloomy city, casting even darker shadows along the buildings and streets.
"Yep, good old Gotham..." Kid Flash replied, crossing his arms over his chest. But not two seconds later the speedster frowned deeply, fixing the Titans with a confused stare. "You guys have never been here?"
"The Batman does not permit outsiders," Starfire replied, hovering to Cyborg's left, "At least, according to Robin." Wally shrugged back before shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans, leading the way into the city.
"So, why do we have to wear these again?" Raven asked, frowning as she examined the rather gothic looking clothing Kid Flash had fetched for her upon their arrival. Wally scoffed, looking at them over his shoulder with an all-knowing smirk.
"Because Bats doesn't like other supers in his city, so we have to blend in civvies," he replied, almost smiling as Beast Boy fumbled with the too-large beanie that covered his hair and pointed ears.
"So as long as no one noticed his green skin, we're home-free..." Cyborg muttered without much enthusiasm, jabbing a thumb towards the rumpled-looking shape-shifter. Beast Boy scowled back at him, though a hint of amusement still shone in his eyes. Kid Flash sighed inwardly; he rather missed having a green-skinned team-mate around.
"All right, this is a big city so we should probably split up." Kid Flash said a few minutes later, stopping in front of an intersection, "Cyborg and Raven, you two should head south. Beast Boy and Starfire, you go North. I'll check east and west."
"This'll be fun..." Raven sighed, slipping into the shadows and heading down the street with Cyborg right behind her. Kid Flash watched them go before pulling his red goggles down over his eyes, nodding at Starfire and Beast Boy.
"Kid Flash, before you go, may I ask a question?" Starfire asked. Kid Flash inwardly groaned, knowing what she wanted to know before she even said it.
"You want to know why we split up?" he offered, and was greeted with two eager nods from the remaining Titans. Wally stared up at the sky with an expression almost as dark as the clouds, sighing heavily, "A couple years ago...One of our team-mates was killed on a mission." Starfire let out a soft gasp, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. But Beast Boy wasn't satisfied and took a step closer to the speedster, eyes narrowed.
"But weren't you guys used to the hero bid by then?" he asked, his head cocked to one side, "Death is kinda something you have to deal with on this job."
"That's what I thought," Kid Flash conceded with a shrug, "Hell, that's what we all thought. But...knowing that you could loose a team-mate and actually watching that team-mate die are two very different things."
"I am sorry for you loss, Kid Flash..." Starfire said softly, "I cannot imagine how you all must have felt." Kid Flash sighed, glancing back at her and offering a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"No...you really can't." he muttered. Beast Boy sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, no where near satisfied with the answers as Starfire was.
"So...who died?" Beast Boy asked. Kid Flash's body stiffened at the words and Starfire glowered at Beast Boy, letting him know that his crudeness was not helping their situation at all.
"We've wasted enough time talking," Kid Flash finally sighed with an edge to his voice, "Just go find Artemis!"
"Wait!" Beast Boy called before he could speed away, "We don't even know what Artemis looks like!"
"Oh believe me, you'll know." Kid Flash huffed, "If you get attacked by a green harpy with way too much hair, that's her." And then Kid Flash was gone, leaving nothing but a breeze and two stunned Titans behind him.
"Was it something I said?" Beast Boy asked, ducking down in time to avoid what would have been a painful smack from the still angry Starfire.
"I believe you spoke to Kid Flash too freely," Starfire replied before flying upwards until she was level with the rooftops. Beast Boy blinked before phasing into a crow, flying up after her, "All the events that broke up the team is still fresh in his mind, even if he does not show it."
"That would explain why Robin never told us about them," Beast Boy replied as he phased back into his human form, landing in a crouch on the closest roof, "But they don't really need to take their old anger out on us, do they?"
"You must try to sympathize, Beast Boy," Starfire soothed as they made their way through the city, both of them unconsciously listening for the screech of a harpy, "No matter how much time passes, the death of a loved one can always haunt you."
"I guess that's true..." Beast Boy muttered, "But it does make me wonder something..."
"What?" Starfire inquired, ducking under some low hanging power lines. Beast Boy met her gaze, his eyes burning with curiosity.
"What was Robin like before that death hit them?" Starfire frowned, her eyes narrowed as his question sunk in.
"Perhaps he was-"
"Star, look out!"
Starfire whirled around, hardly having time to see the green arrow flying toward her before it exploded, wrapping the Tamaranean girl in a thick wire net that sent her falling to the rooftop. Beast Boy growled and phased into a tiger, rushing forward to attack when two more arrows flew towards him from the darkness.
Beast Boy leaped over the first arrow, which exploded into a net like the one before beneath his feet, but snarled in pain when the second one slammed into his forehead, snapping the tip off and encasing his face in a thick putty-like substance, which hardened in moments.
Starfire sat up, melting through the wire netting with her Starbolts before flying over to Beast Boy and using her eye lasers to blast the hard putty casing from his face. Beast Boy immediately phased back into his human form, gasping for breathe.
"Who is there?!" Starfire called out, helping Beast Boy to his feet before levitating a few yards higher to get a better vantage point. The two were met with silence, save for the faint hum of traffic in the distance. Beast Boy brushed stray bits of the shattered putty from his hair, scowling.
"If I had to take an educated guess, I'd say it was Artemis." Beast Boy replied, suddenly yelping when a green compound boy smacked him hard in the face, sending him reeling backwards. He'd hardly hit the ground before he felt the pressure of a bow on his neck and the weight of a body pressing down on his chest.
"Who are you?!" The figure hissed, leaning forward. Beast Boy shook his head to regain his senses, looking up to see a young woman, at least four or five years older than himself.
Green-colored combat outfit. Huge braid of blonde hair tied behind her. Sharp gray eyes that sent a shiver of fear down his spine.
Yep. This had to be Artemis.
"Please wait - We are friends of Kid Flash!" Starfire said placatingly, floating down in front of them.
"All more the reason to attack you," the young woman known as Artemis hissed, not bothering to get off of Beast Boy, "I don't give a damn why you're here, but you have ten minutes to get out!"
"Well aren't you a sight for sore eyes." All three looked up when they felt the breeze. Kid flash stared back down at them, not bothering to hide his glare, "You always had the bad habit of shooting first and asking questions later, Artie."
"Either get out of my city or I shoot an arrow up your-!"
"Okay, what'd we miss?" Everyone looked over against to see Cyborg and Raven approaching them, their eyes flashing when they spotted Artemis.
"Um...can I get up now?" Beast Boy asked. Artemis turned her sharp gaze towards him and glared before pushing herself up, still gripping her bow tightly.
"Once again, why the hell are you all in my city?!" she snapped, glowering at Kid Flash and the Titans after doing a quick mental headcount.
"I'll cut to the chase," Kid Flash replied, "We need your help to-"
"Pass." Artemis snapped, turning on her heels and walking away. Kid Flash glared and was at her side not a second later.
"You can't just stomp off this time, Artemis!" he snapped, grabbing her by the arm and whirling her around to face him, "Robin's in serious danger!" Artemis drew back as if to punch him but froze at the mention of Robin's name.
"Robin's in danger?" she repeated, but the sudden worry in her eyes was quickly replaced with anger, "What the hell did you do this time?!" Starfire and Beast Boy exchanged worried glances while Raven just stared impassively at the archer. Cyborg stood beside her, looking ready to intervene if he had to.
"Me?!" Kid Flash replied incredulously, "What make's you think I-?!"
"Because you're the biggest screw-up I've ever met, Wally! You're the reason the Shadows found us that night!"
"So I trusted the wrong person!" Kid Flash snarled, throwing his hand up angrily, "But as I recall you led Sportsmaster right to us, so you're half the reason Donna's dead!"
