“Dude, how long is this going to take?”
“This is a very delicate procedure, KF. I could set off the entire base’s security system if I get even one pass-code wrong. And I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not be stuck in here with fifteen different three feet thick metal doors locking us in. Along with flashing red lights, loud sirens, and sleeping gas.”
Wally huffed, crossing his arms in childish annoyance. “It’s not like we don’t have breathing masks,” he muttered.
Ignoring his pouting friend, Dick continued to tap away at his HoloComputer’s keyboard, muttering algorithms under his breath. Usually he would have had this done so much faster but he was a little distracted by his friend’s proximity. Things had been a little... strained between them ever since they’d started being thrown into strange situations a few times a week. Dick always considered himself graceful before That One Time They Don’t Speak Of, but since being knocked into Wally by a stampeding Rolly, it seemed his body decided that throwing itself onto the speedster whenever possible was a terrific idea.
And Dick... Dick was beginning to almost-sorta-kinda like it.
Which was not something he’d ever admit out loud.
“Hey, KF, do you think you could -” he began, turning to his friend.
And froze.
Wally had been moving to lean over his shoulder at his name at the same time Dick was turning around. Normally, this would have resulted in their heads clashing, but since the universe obviously had it out for them, it was, of course, their mouths that met instead.
It was just the slightest press of Wally’s lips to the corner of Dick’s mouth, but with everything that had been happening it felt like so much more. Dick couldn’t stop the small hitch of his breath as he slowly pulled away, staring into his friend’s equally shocked gaze, the green eyes wide but dark, darker than they had been before.
“Rob -” Wally began.
“Robin, are you almost in?” a voice in their ears asked, jolting the two to reality. “We’re nearly to the lab.”
“Y-yeah,” Dick stuttered, face burning as he turned back to the screen. “Just - Just give me a second. Only one character left.”
“Everything alright over there?” Aqualad asked, sounding concerned. “You sound a little strange.”
“Yeah, I’m - we’re - everything’s fine,” he said, wincing at how un-convincing he sounded.
“... are you sure?”
“Yep,” he chirped, pressing one last key. “And it’s done, so the doors should be open. KF and I will meet you there in a bit, all right?”
“Right. Aqualad out.”
Sighing wearily, Dick leaned against the desk before him - knowing that if he turned around, all he would see was an empty room.
“Damn it.”
