She slams in the textbooks next, trying to replace the ache with anger. No one who still had school prescribed textbooks should have to die, especially when there are people who left school so long ago. Finally she comes to the science textbooks, and she finds she can’t fling them with the same anger, so she caresses the spine of each book before gently placing them inside a different box. She won’t give those ones back to the school.
After that her heart breaks with every little nic-nac she has to put away, the little treasures collected over a life cut too short, knowing that the person who so diligently hoarded them will not be able to come back to them, or ever appreciate them again.
Barry still hasn’t come home yet. She wants him to, wants to share her grief as it overwhelms her, but understands that his own loss has already pushed him to tipping point. There is a broken man running around somewhere in the world underneath the Flash costume, but wherever he goes he won’t be able to find his Kid.
Hours later, Iris looks around a blank room that used to be so filled with life and allows herself to cry. She doesn’t care if her tears wipe away the fading scent of a boy held dear, she just wants to hug it close one last times. Many, many times actually, but she’s finally beginning to recognise this will be it.
No one comes to check on her, even if they do hear her tears, just like no one has come to help her with this terrible, damning task, but that’s okay. She recognises this as her cross to bare.

Also, the phrase is "cross to bear", as in to endure or, in literal terms, carry.

Dammit! I debated over that one, but sleep deprived is never a good state to be making grammar decisions.

Oh my god, it was so heart wrenching watching Iris packing away all of Wally's belongings and go through the mourning process; Iris going through Anger to Despair until finally Acceptance. Reading about how Barry is trying to hope that Wally's death would just go away shows that he feels truly hopeless and perhaps is in slight denial. Maybe he believes that if he goes fast enough around the world, he could reverse the rotation of the earth and reverse time to the point right before Wally had to give up his life (I remember that from the first Superman Movie). And, the line "she recognizes this as her cross to bare," was just a beautiful addition that shows the feelings of guilt Iris must be feeling and made me cry even more.
You are one awesome writer!anon and this was just perfect; even if it was a 'minifill', it was still great.

I hadn't thought about that, I just thought that that's what speedsters do when everything is out of control, they run. Barry's not really thinking straight, but that idea might well be in the mix of emotions. I think he, along with Iris, slightly blames her for it, though he doesn't want to and Iris kinda sees that.
Thankyou!

That's really sad... And that Iris is cleaning up his room, instead of his parents... D:

I always thought Wally might live with or have a room at Iris and Barry's place as well, but I can also see the whole family falling apart (and kinda blaming Iris) and it being left to her to sort stuff out.
