He blinked his eyes open to the site of brilliant lights flashing over head and a muddle of people shouting orders, he tried to call for Batman but instead coughed. An action that sent his chest flaring into a hot mess of pain and agony.
"It's going to be alright son." A shadow appeared above him. A hand, warm, soft, and reassuring gently nestled on his forehead before his eyes slipped shut once again.
___________
The next time he woke he was pleasantly numb, even if it felt like his head was full of an ungodly amount of cotton balls. He could hear someone beside him, feel his hand being held tightly between theirs, could feel the warmth of the persons breath, and brush of their lips on his fingers from words being whispered but couldn't hear what was being said.
He sighed in content before drifting off to sleep.
___________
The final time he awoke it was like falling head first from a freight train; he jolted awake, adrenaline pounding through his veins, his body tense and ready.
"Dick?"
At his name Dick turned and gasped for breath-moving hurt.
"It's okay chum." Blue eyes widened at the gruff voice of his mentor.
"Bruce." Tears prickled at the edges of Dicks vision at the site of his adoptive father, not Batman, sitting beside him. He was glad, he didn't think he could handle being the stoic Boy Wonder just then.
Bruce brought his hand up to settle against Dicks forehead and the boy nuzzled against it, appreciating the warmth it brought. "Swear you're going to make me grey before I'm forty."
Dick grinned before looking around the room trying to distinguish where he was. Bruce seemed to understand and answered.
"You're in the Med Bay at the Watchtower."
Dick nodded.
"How you're feeling?"
"Like... was...shish kabobed."
Bruce narrowed his eyes. "Not even remotely funny."
Dick huffed a laugh before moving his left hand to rest against the bandage on his chest. "Lil.. lil funny."
"You're lung collapsed, Dick. Good Lord, I just..." Bruce rubbed a hand over his eyes. "New Rule, I'm wrapping you in bubble wrap before every mission. If it hadn't been for M'gann contacting J'onn. I don't.."
Grimacing at the tightness from moving his arm, Dick rested his hand on Bruce's. "S'okay. M'good. Pain.. mmnnhhpmh, painkillers are awesome."
Bruce couldn't help it, he chuckled, and grinned like an idiot. After the stress of endless days of worry and waiting for signs of improvement and just wanting to see his kids beautiful baby blues again, all the tension he'd been harboring let itself out.
Dick looked at Bruce like he had been exposed to Joker's laughing gas. "You sure... you 'kay?"
Taking a deep breath Bruce leaned his forehead against Dicks thigh. "Yeah, Chum. I'm just glad you're okay. Get some rest, you're going to need it. Your teams been trying to bust down the door to get in here."
At the mention of his team, Dick asked. "KF, okay?"
"He's fine, Dick. Got his bell rung pretty badly but he's fine. Everyone else is as well. Get some rest, alright?"
Dick nodded already half asleep.
Bruce smiled down at his partner and thanked a god he didn't believe in that he'd been spared losing his son.

I did not fully comprehend the meaning of "beyond my expectations" until this piece of love came into my life.
And holy sensitivity, Batman! The ending is so cute!! I don't think there will ever be too much Daddy-Bats on this meme (or in general.)
But really. Thank you. This honestly made my day year lifetime.

Thank you for prompting that awesome picture! :D

And thank you for making the ending happy! I can only handle so much angst. xD
'He tried to tell them it wasn't that bad, not near as bad as the time Two Face had beaten him with the baseball bat' Oh. Oh you poor thing. D:

I have to have happy endings because I'm weird like that, lol. As much as I like angst and hurt/comfort I like everything to be all honky dory in the end! xD
I know >_< , sadly I think that's my favorite part of the comics though. Because it showed Robin that the hero business wasn't a game that his actions had consequences, and also because he got beat nearly to death by Two Face and then we actually got to see some worried papa!bats.
Erm, anyways, thank you for commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D

I was really excited when one of my commenters on DA linked this to me. I was hoping for a little story to go along with this picture. This was just wonderful! Loved the Robin/ Sportsmaster dialogue.
Contrary to what I draw usually... I like for Rob to make a getaway.

I'm happy you liked it! Glad you liked the Sportsmaster/Robin bit because I know very little of him from comics canon and the show hasn't shown much of him, lol, so I wasn't sure how it would come out. I actually want to go back and rewrite and expand this some but school is so freaking lame right now that I dont have time. X\
Also, also, I love your drawings on DA. I just started going through them after I saw this prompt. And they are awesome!
And I should really stop talking, lol. I tend to be a bit ranty. x3
