But then there are times when he runs out of things to think about, and it always goes back to Dick. Always. Wally thinks about all the mistakes they made on the mission, every possible route they could have - should have - taken so that they all got out alive, blaming himself for not thinking about it sooner, for being too slow, for not being there for him. He thinks about all the things he should have said to him, all the things he should have done with him, wondering how he could be so scared or so selfish when he was his best friend. And all he can do is sit down and cry because he misses Dick so damn much he can’t bare it.
That’s only sometimes, though. Now that the others have moved on - as much as any of them will ever be able to - it’s easier not to think about him, and the fact that they are never going to see him again. These days, the team is even closer, now that they all know what they have to lose. Some days Wally can even kid himself into thinking that Dick would be proud of it, leaving them with one last gift. Some days Wally forgets his guilt and mourning and has to run as fast as he can to burn off the anger he feels towards Dick abandoning them, that selfish bastard.
Some days, he manages not to think about him at all.
Still, you would think that they would have learned their lesson and been a bit more careful on mission after his death. Maybe that was just part of being a superhero; you could never plan for anything. He’s going to go with that excuse as the five of them are wrapped in green light from the is-not-actually-a-death-ray ray.
