Everybody Knows, We're all Mad Here (Trigger Warning) anonymous August 13 2011, 21:57:22 UTC
Trigger Warning-Child Abuse, non specific but heavily hinted at sexual abuse.

Ivy raised an eyebrow at the young heroes. A cold, little smile twisted her lips. "No. I don't think we'll be giving them back." In Harley Quinn's arms, the six missing children shivered and stared, wide eyed, at the bright costumes. "The Joker may be a useless, psychotic bastard. But he wasn't wrong about the condition these children were living."

Behind her girlfriend, Quinn yelled, "Tell Batty he can't have my babies back. He's not going to take care of them. They'll just go right back to the bad place without me and Ivy."

Robin raised a soothing hand, watching the vines creeping around his team warily. "Social Services is already looking into the conditions of the groups homes associated with..."

"Don't try to pacify me, little bird," Ivy hissed. "I may have morals, unlike the rest of Gotham. But that doesn't mean I won't tie up your team and leave them for the police. The caretakers at that hellhole took /money/ to let these children be hurt. All of them should have choked to death on laughing gas."

Kaldur glanced at Robin. The younger boy looked uncertain, visible shifting on the soles of his feet. M'gan flicked her gaze nervously between the two supervillians. It was Wally who finally spoke up, "Do you mean that," he asked with surprising gravity. "I mean... Did the people at the home really let other adults hurt you guys?" he addressed the question to the kids.

The kids huddled further back into Quinn except for a tall girl and little boy with blonde hair who held hands. The little girl spoke first, "They said we were special. That we had to be nice to the grown-ups who wanted to play with us. If we weren't nice we were put in the bath." She seemed to gather herself up as Ivy walked over and placed a soothing hand on her shoulder. "We don't /want/ to be special anymore. Ever since Ms. Ivy took us away, we haven't had to be special or nice. I /like/ Ms. Ivy and Harley. They don't let the grown-ups hurt us."

"Oh, pumpkin," Quinn moaned softly. "Don't worry. Me and Ivy won't let anyone hurt you ever."

KF swallowed hard, looking back at the rest of the team. Artemis was pale beneath her mask. Her bow visibly shoke in her hand. Kaldur looked deeply unsettled. Superboy was confused. Robin's face had finally settled into a resigned expression. "You'll have to get them out of Gotham," he told Ivy pointedly. "If they stay here someone's going to figure it out."

Ivy snorted delicately. "Like I would be so irresponsible as to raise children in this city. No, I think I'll take the family to South America for a while. There’s some interesting botanical research being done in the jungle greenhouses."

"Fine." Robin stepped to the side, further away from the creeping vines.
Kaldur followed suit. "We won't stop you," he agreed blandly. "Take care." The rest of Young Justice settled themselves clear of Ivy's vines.

Ivy and Quinn carefully herded their children into a tight bunch, and, led by Quinn, made their way out of the park to where a bright green mini-van was parked. As they passed, the team could hear Ivy reassuring her 'seedlings' that no one was going to steal them away. Quinn paused in front of Robin, "There's always room for a big brother, birdie."

Robin shook his head. "I'm needed here Harley. But thanks." She patted his head regretfully before scurrying after the children.

M'gan lifted her fingers to her temple as they disappeared out of sight. Kaldur turned to watch the van. "Did we do the right thing?" he asked the telepath softly.

The Martian listened for several seconds. "Yes. Harley Quinn is...not normal. But she loves them. Deeply. She wants to protect them from all the hurts that drove her mad. Ivy is also... Ivy empathizes with them. Strongly. She wants Harley to be happy. And those children make Harley so happy. The children feel safe with them."

"They'll be fine," Robin declared abruptly. "Ivy planned all this from the beginning. Quinn was the one who designed the bombing of the group home. It was much more controlled than the Joker's usual antics. Plus, the Joker was found after the bombing in some sort of coma. Toxins are Ivy's specialty. It wouldn't have been hard to get Quinn to slip him some while Ivy rescued the kids. They retreated to the park, Ivy's ground, for a showdown. I think Ivy wanted to give Harley a family so she'd stop going back to the Joker."

KF snorted, "For the record, Gotham is /messed up/." No one disagreed.
----------
It's word of God that Quinn and Ivy are together. The fact that the Joker is an abusive bastard is canon. Harley's maternal instincts are based on Return of the Joker and some of her commentary in various animated series and comics.
