His gaze, of course, was locked onto mine.
“Hi…,” his pathetic excuse for a pubescent voice gleamed, “Uh, why am I pointing at you?”
What. On. Earth.
“Master…Richard-” Grayson? This was Grayson? Pennyworth stayed by my side with a noticeable gap in between and the tentativeness showed across his face. “Is that…could that possibly be you?”
The ensemble of choice screamed Drake. No visible green-the puniness, that went with Drake’s incompetence if this boy truly were a Robin, but that goofy smile, that irritating smirk god-forbid that was more than unnatural across the face of Batman was truly there. “Hi, Alfie! Sup?”
Oh, Great Grandfather. Loudly, I interrupted if only to rub the amazement off Pennyworth’s face. “We’ll have to perform a DNA test. It’s what Father would have done.”
“Yes, I-” The butler was baffled. The butler whom seemed most detached from this long string of adoption in this family was baffled. “Of course, Master Damian. A good choice-if only for precaution.”
Evidently he doubted my suspicions. Pennyworth left without so much another word, dialing away on the There was of course, the matter of this insufferable brat-how old was he? Why on earth was he here? Who on earth did he think he was-
“Hey!” -jumping opposite of me in a childish-perch, expectant to scare me as an inkling of smugness appeared across his features. Not-Grayson hummed with delight, looking to my uniform with great interest before having the nerve to poke my boot. “So…green?”
“You act as though you’ve never had green on your uniform.” And as thought this was completely normal, and he was an idiotic child on a fieldtrip.
“I have-hahaha.” That-that laugh--“But I never thought I’d still keep it. How old are you?”
“Ten.”
“Oh.” Through his opaque lenses it was apparent that he blinked, and only a moment later, not-Grayson blinked. “You’re really tall, then.”
“You’re quite calm for someone who does not know what his future has in store. Or,” I added wryly, eyes narrowing under my own mask, “For someone who does not realize their current situation.”
“Alternate reality where the Robin wears green boots, Batman uses a bunker and-oh.” Not-Grayson whistled loudly with approval as he turned his head toward the Batmobile. “The Batmobile flies. Smooth. Aside from that, everything else is a little underwhelming.”
“You cannot be serious.”
“I’m rather appointed, actually.” He put his hands on his hips as if proving his point and the first sign of a migraine passed overhead. Then suddenly, Not-Grayson frowned when I deliberately ignored him. “You know…opposite of ‘disappoint’? Don’t tell me you don’t like words. I’m all about the words.”
This…Grayson…reeked of sick joy, not a care in the world of his duties. One would find it hard to believe he cared for his duty-that he could survive in this world. “Under what jurisdiction do you not believe I could mangle you?”
“‘Mangle me’?” Not-Grayson repeated long and strenuously. He tapped his foot and hummed. “Nah, I trust the butler.”
“You’re an imbecile.”
“You’re kind of boring. Hahaha, don’t tell me I’ve got to knock some fun into you.” Not-Grayson broke into an indispensible grin and heeled by my side with curiosity. “So what’s my name in this universe? Are you seriously ten? How do you put up with Bruce? Scratch that-how does Bruce put up with you?”
Suddenly it occurred to me there were several factors that contributed to his behavior, if this Robin turned out to be one Richard Grayson. He yet to separate from Father, yet to realize his potential as his own human being, yet to detach himself from all around him-yet to put on the cowl.
This Grayson had no clue that one day he would wield the mantle and become the second Batman.
