"Bruce-"

"Let me finish." The Dark Knight growled, that authority tone even in his tired voice. Enough to make Dick shut up, anyway.

"I will die. Maybe not today, tomorrow, or even years from now. But, eventually, I will. And-" He took a deep breath, wincing at the act. "-When I do it'll be your job to take out." Dick's eyes widened.

"But, me? Batman? I can't-"

"You can." Batman sighed. "The time will come and when it does I know you'll be ready. You're a smart kid, Dick. No one else could be better."

"But-"

"Gotham will need a protector." Bruce interrupted, ending his son one of his scary stares. "I like to believe that, one day, it wont but I doubt that will be in either of our life times." He took another breath and winced again. Dick flinched. "No one will be better than you."

"I-"

"It's why I chose you." Batman murmured, his eyes falling shut again, his voice getting softer. "Why I allowed you to be Robin, to be my partner." Dick's heart slammed into his chest. "There's no one better." Bruce's voice became even softer and Dick had to lean in to hear him. "No one better than... you... no one... I.... know.... it. You'll be ready.... trust... me."

"Bruce..."

"Promise me, Dick."

"I-"

"Promise."

Robin sighed, reaching out to retake his adoptive father's hand, holding it firmly in his own so Bruce would notice. "I promise to always protect Gotham and to... to take over as Batman if need be."

A soft smile pulled at the corners of Bruce's lips, "...Good.... boy...." And the slipped away, falling unconscious.

Dick checked his pulse and his heart was fine, the boy letting out a relieved breath.

"Robin! Bats!"

Dick looked over to see Flash, Superman right behind him. Dick reluctantly stood back as Superman bent down to lift his friend off the ground. Then, silently, the superhero boyscout flew out of the factory.

Flash nudged him and Dick looked over, spotting the domino mask and cowl in Barry's hands. "Might wanna put yours back on." The speedster offered and Dick nodded, hoping there was enough stick left as the placed it on his face.

Dick also took Batman's cowl, holding it tightly in his hands.

"He'll be fine, you know." Bart reminded, a smile on his face. "I've seen Bats get worse."

"I know." Robin murmured. "I know."

Their gazes met and the second speedster's smile fell before it came back. "Wanna ride?" As he spoke Barry bent down.

Riding piggy-back on Flash wasn't the most manly way to get back to base but it seemed to be the most logical. With a nod the acrobat climbed aboard and then Flash was darting through city streets, everything around them a blur.

Fifteen years later.

Dick Grayson stared at himself in the full-length mirror, his blue eyes scanning over his appearance skeptically.

He looked ridiculous.

Dick wasn't made for the Batman suit. It was too bulky. Too big. Too Bruce. And the cape? Dick's got comfortable to fighting without a cape thanks to his Nightwing costume. Now he had to get readjusted to the thing which means he would be slower.

"You're too scrawny."

Dick twisted around, his gaze falling to the newest Robin. Damien Wayne. Dick looked at his appearance and couldn't but agree. "Bruce filled it out better."

"Why don't you change the costume?" The young boy mused, voice bored as he placed him on Dick's bed. His Robin's cape floating over his shoulders.

"Nah." Dick shrugged, "Bruce would want it the same. Batman is a symbol. You can't just change a symbol." Damian snorted. "What?"

"Nothing, you just actually sounded like Batman for a second. Instead of some punk inside his suit." The Boy Wonder shrugged and stood again, picking up Dick's cowl before tossing it to him. "Too bad you are just some punk. You know, full-filling a promise isn't worth the sullying of Batman's name."

Dick glared, "I'm not going to sully anything."

"Sure, Grayson, sure." Damian left the room then, his cape flowing behind him as he went. With a sigh Dick turned back to the mirror.

He hated to admit but Damian was right. He wasn't Batman.

No one better but you.

The first Robin still had trouble believing that.

To his left, outside, Dick noticed the Batman symbol in Gotham's night sky and sighed, looking at himself once more before slipping on the cowl and heading to the door.

On the way he glanced at his mask face in the mirror and gave it a frown.

He definitely wasn't Bruce Wayne.

But he'd do his damnedest to be Batman.
