The Doctor had never really approved of him, Jack knew. At first it was mostly because of how he flirted with everyone around him (*coughwithRosecough*) but later, it was mostly because of what he was.
Immortal.
To be honest, it really, really, really wasn't the best thing in the world. But it was useful.
Really, really, really useful. Especially in this line of work.
Apparently Jack's manner of immortality hurt the Doctor's head or something. But even though it was obvious it bothered him, Jack had noticed the Doctor getting better about not reacting with outright hostility to him/running off to the end of the universe to try and get rid of him.
And that was why it made Jack want to go berserk. The first time the Doctor greets Captain Jack Harkness with friendship, he's dying. Shot, and bleeding out on the ground. He wanted to go back and find the person- beast- who shot the Doctor and drag him through any hell Jack could find. Tidal waves, fire, live power cables, lava. Things Jack would survive, but that bastard would not.
But he couldn't. He couldn't leave the Doctor like this, wounded and unconscious, with Martha not here yet, and the other two conscious people complete strangers. Well, presumably the kid was the Doctor's friend, and the girl who had shown up out of nowhere was his daughter, but how possible was that, really? He was pretty sure there weren't any Time Ladies in the universe any more. And even if the Doctor had recognized her, that meant nothing, since in the last fifteen years or so the Doctor had been hanging out with certifiable costumed WIERDOS. In this regeneration or whatever the hall it was, the Doctor obviously had issues with judgement.
Fortunately, it wasn't too long before Martha did show up. She jumped out of the special kitted-out jeep that UNIT had loaned to them (it looked more like a tank. A medical tank with wheels) to help load the Doctor into the back, but stopped, face frozen with disbelief when she saw Jenny.
“Martha!” Jenny jumped up and ran to her. “I haven't seen you in ages!”
Martha grabbed Jenny in a hug. “Jenny, we thought you'd died!” she choked out.
“So did I.”
“So she is the Doctor's daughter?” Jack cut in to the reunion, curious.
“Through cloning. It's a long story,” Martha said, suddenly all business as she strode over to the Doctor.
The kid, Jack noticed, hadn't moved the whole time.
“My God, he looks so young!” Martha breathed as she did a field-check on him.
Jack said nothing, letting her work. He understood her shock, though. He'd seen pictures of the Doctor's other incarnations in some records (Torchwood and otherwise). The Doctor just doesn't regenerate that young. He almost wants to say something's wrong, but he already knows that something's wrong. Martha explained what a Chameleon Arch was, and what it did, but the Doctor knew Jack, and Jenny. Even though he hadn't been there while the Doctor had been hiding as a human, he was sure that the level of recognition shown shouldn't have been possible with a Chameleon Arch involved.
But just to double check...
“Hey, kid.” The masked boy reluctantly tore his eyes away from the door of the jeep-tank. “How long have you known the Doctor. Or whatever you call him.”
“I've known Wally-” Jack could hear the insistent undertones, “- for about three years now. Why?”
“Well, that rules out Chameleon Arch, definitely.” Jack sighed. “Doctor, what the hell happened to you?”
AN: For those who don't know, when the Doctor used the Chameleon Arch, it turned every cell in his body human (it hurt. A lot, btw) and he only remembered Martha enough to get her a job at the school he was working in. (Long story) So, Jack is saying that since the Doctor can remember them after at least three years, it can't be the Arch.
Buuut... Jenny had the watch, and- and-
