It was salmon. Devouring the food Wally found one thing to like about this ridiculous party, the snacks were pretty good. It was almost as good as Alfred’s or Aunt Iris’s food-almost. Once he was done eating the three of them lapsed into a silence that wasn’t exactly comfortable but it was nowhere near as tense as it’d been down at the bottom of the stairs. Wally was a little more confident that Barbara wouldn’t swoop in and kidnap Dick away. Which was an odd but plausible image now that he really thought about it-Batgirl swooping in and taking Robin away- not to say that it’d ever happen, those two just seemed like really close friends, or so he told himself. Wally let his mind wander for a few seconds or minutes or however long it was, but he was the first one to talk when the silence finally became a bit too much. “So how’d you two meet?”

Dick looked thoughtful for a second, “She’s Commissioner Gordon’s daughter so that made meeting her as Robin pretty easy at times, but that was later. Main thing, she goes to my school,” he smiled a bit.

“Made friends with him one of the first days he was there,” Barbara continued, “No one else would since he came from the circus or some other bull like that.”

“We’ve been friends ever since and eventually she figured out I was Robin,” Dick said with a shrug.

“Oh, that’s…cool,” Wally muttered.

It sort of was, but wasn’t. Made him feel a little bad for having met Dick as Robin at first, it made their friendship seem…well not as strong. Dick nudged him in the arm, and when Wally looked at Dick he smiled that smile that made his heart do little triple back flips, “I like our story better. It’s so much cooler.”

Smiling back Wally felt ten times better and on Barbara’s polite inquiry of how he met some of the other team members he launched into the tale of how he met Roy. They spent another twenty minutes just talking and it wasn’t too bad. Barbara was pretty cool- Wally could easily push back the little remaining jealousy, it was easy to see that at the moment he had nothing to worry about. So it came as a mild surprise when out of nowhere she pushed back and announced loudly, “Well, I’m going to go down and get some punch then!”

They stared, “Okay…”

She smiled, “Probably won’t be back for a while,” she shrugged and started down the stairs, “You could probably go get some fresh air while you wait. There’s a pretty cool looking balcony down the hall- or so I’ve heard anyways.”

Both of them looked down the hall where just distantly a propped open door could be seen. Wally quickly glanced at Barbara who was pointedly looking at him- which was kind of odd because he hadn’t outwardly mentioned his deep, deep liking of Dick. Or he had, but she hadn’t really heard him, unless he was that obvious, in which case Dick should already know- but he didn’t. Wally rubbed his head again; another brief headache from thinking in circles again. Dick grabbed his hand, “Come on, fresh air sounds good right now,” and almost instantly his brief head pain was forgotten in favor of the fact that he was holding hands with Dick.

They’d held hands before, but back then Wally hadn’t been so hyperaware- or trying to confess either. Together they walked to the propped open door. Dick peeked in, “Wow, this is nice.”

Pushing open the door Wally looked around, a cold breeze making him realize how warm it was inside the building. Stepping out Wally let out a small whistle; the view really was something else. It faced the courtyard that had briefly been set up and decorated for the large amount of people. As the night wore on and people had left they’d closed it down, and they had yet to shut off the lights. Or maybe they had but someone had turned them back on, there was no one down there and no real reason for it to be on other than it looked pretty from up here. Wally stole a quick glance at Dick, this would be a perfect place to confess, it had sort of romantic feel about it- better than his original plan that was for sure. There was really nothing stopping him. “So uh, Dick…”

“Yeah?” at once all of Dick’s attention was on him.

He couldn’t mess this up…right? “So I’ve been trying to tell you something really important, but…every time I keep getting interrupted so I’m just going to say it,” Wally took a deep breath, “Dick I really like you, I mean really like you. I…would you-“

With a series of loud popping noises the light bulbs shattered and the whole yard was engulfed in darkness. Wally blinked rapidly, trying to adjust his eyes to what little light there was but with cloud cover and the house being so far from any real street lights the area was pretty dang dark. From inside he could hear muttered swearwords, the voice sounded familiar. “Barbara?”

Wally’s eyes were assaulted by the sudden appearance of a flashlight; squinting he turned and saw Dick give sheepish smile, “Never leave home without it?” Wally asked blankly, eyeing the small glint of gold that was hidden away under Dick’s clothes as he spoke.

“Never,” Dick confirmed with a small smile, pushing open the door and the two of them stepped into the mansion.

He swept the beam across the hall and Wally openly glared a little at Barbara who smiled at them and waved, “Hi guys,” she held up her own flashlight, “Fancy meeting you two here.”

“Yeah, fancy that…” Wally muttered dryly- he’d been just seconds away!

Dick frowned, “Is everything alright do you think?”

Listening for a minute Wally shrugged, “I don’t hear any screaming so it can’t be too bad…” he watched as Barbara turned on her own light and with that the three of them headed down the hall and towards the stairs.

At that top they all looked down, downstairs people were milling around in confusion, and most of them were now noticing the flashlight beams and looking up- a few people glared at them. Only in Gotham, Wally thought bitterly. Dick sighed, “I’m going to go find Bruce. You go with Wally to see what caused this. You know where it is right Babs?”

She smiled, “Of course.”

Nodding Dick started down the stairs, stopped for a moment and then with a small shake of his head he kept going down, disappearing quickly into the crowd. It was easy to track him this time though, the light beam being one of the very few light sources around made it easy to see his progress. Wally sighed, this really…really sucked. “We better get going,” he said after a moment.

Barbara nodded and together the two of them walked down the stairs and entered the crowd, it was fairly slow going. Most people started asking questions, what was going on, where they had gotten the lights, so on and so forth. It was pure habit that had him happily giving reassurances and smiles and for once he wasn’t met with a constant bad attitude that people in Gotham seemed to have- it was a nice, if not odd, change. Wally realized that, sure it delayed them a little more, but it was better than giving them no answers. Twenty minutes later, by Wally’s pretty much accurate estimate, had them in front of a solid door.

Opening it they were met by some good old rickety stairs and down in the dark they could see more flashlight beams dancing around. “Guess we’re not the only ones taking a look down here,” Wally said with a small smile.

He started down but Barbara stayed at the top, it didn’t take long to notice considering she was his light source. Pausing he looked at her, “Aren’t you coming?”

“You’ve done this a lot, haven’t you?’

Wally frowned, “Done what?”

She smiled faintly, “Tried to confess.”

“Oh,” Wally scowled, and turned to look down the stairs at the lights, “Yeah…I have.”

Barbara walked down and hesitantly placed her hand on his shoulder, “You’ll get through someday, and I know he’ll accept,” she paused, “It’s just bad luck.”

When Wally didn’t say anything Barbara removed her hand and headed down the stairs. For a moment longer Wally remained where he was before with a sigh he followed after her. At the bottom of the stairs there was a collection of police men that had been at the party- off duty- and Barbara’s dad. Wally managed to smile through the whole thing; even if his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. He wasn’t quite sure this was just bad luck.

The power outage remained a mystery for that night and the party was called to a close. It was only in the light of day that they found a little device hidden and un-seeable in the black of last night, the cause of the power outage. Some thief had been aiming to steal from the rich partygoers; he was arrested a few days later of course. Wally went home without getting to see Dick, and he couldn’t help but wonder if there was something more at work than just a string of bad luck. If something was scientifically against him being able to confess. It was a very childish thought, sort of, but Wally found it just as odd that he could attempt to confess over 70 times- last night had been 76- and each time have something come up and knock him back. Wally sometimes wondered why he kept trying.

No matter how many times he’d wonder that his mind would wander back to the reasons. To the smiles and the looks and the energy and…and to just Dick, and with renewed hope- getting fainter each time he failed- he’d keep going. He’d get it out there someday…right?
