Obstacle three was Batman. Two weeks of hard work and using Robin very, very often, resulted in them keeping the dog from Batman. Black Canary had even helped once, pulling him away and turning him pointedly away from the dog as Wally raced to get Krypto (the second) back into his room. All of that hard week was now gone in one small mistake, and now Krypto (the second) was sitting happily on the very edge of Batman’s cape and looking at him expectantly- having dropped the squeaky mouse at the Dark Knight’s feet. All of them stared and waited, holding their breaths but keeping their positions.

This collective held breath lasted until very slowly Batman turned to them again. Robin glanced at Kid Flash and for a moment Artemis thought it’d be a repeat of her own distraction- but then Batman spoke. “As I was saying, this mission is-“ and continued like there currently was a little dog pawing at his boots, expecting him to throw the little pink squeaky mouse.

Artemis found her attention for Batman’s speech, gone. Her eyes were drawn to Krypto (the second) he had picked up the mouse and was turning his attention to them. She quickly looked up, to avoid the dogs gaze, and secretly felt glad when Krypto (the second) trotted up to Kid Flash and pawed at his leg. There was a slight hesitation and the mouse which had been sitting at his feet one second was now flying through the air the next. Batman ignored that fact and kept talking like this mini-game of fetch wasn’t going on.

The end of the briefing he gave this look that paused Kid Flash mid throw mouse in hand. “It’s come to my attention that there’s something you want to tell me.”

The team looked at each other, then very cautiously, “I don’ think I know what you mean,” Wally said, throwing the mouse- Krypto (the second) racing across, nails clicking across the stone.

“The dog.”

Everyone winced, everyone except Superboy. Glaring he took a slight step forward, “What about him?”

“This is not the place to have a pet.”

“It’s my home,” Superboy scowled, “Home’s can have pets,” he turned to Wally, “He has a turtle, why can’t I have a dog?”

Artemis leaned towards Wally slightly, “You have a turtle?”

“Velocity,” he glared, “Don’t mock the turtle.”

She smirked but kept it in mind for later, leaning back into place as Batman directed his gaze towards them. “Have you all known about this?”

“We have,” Kaldur replied honestly.

“How long,” he didn’t sound angry…sort of.

Robin answered this, “Two weeks just about.”

“I see…” Batman fell silent and the team waited.

Well, would’ve waited if not for Krypto (the second). He came bounding back in, squeaking his mouse wildly, Superboy picked him up and like always the dog calmed and wagged his tail. “I’m keeping him,” he said fiercely, “Nothing you say will stop me.”

“I didn’t plan on it. It’s name.”

“His,” Superboy stressed with a small glare, “His name is Krypto the second.”

Batman might’ve quirked a smile, but Artemis wasn’t sure- if he had it was gone in a second. He eyed the collar for a moment and then without a word turned and walked towards the exit, “You have a mission to do,” and was gone.

For a moment everyone stared, “Does this mean we can keep him?” M’gann asked cautiously.

Wally shrugged, “As good as we are gonna get from Bats.”

Artemis glanced at M’gann, she was eyeing Krypto (the second) with a curious look in her eyes. “Do you think…he’d mind if I got a dog myself? Krypto the second would like a playmate I’m sure.”

Before anyone could say a word Superboy broke into a tiny smile, “I think that’s a great idea.”

Krypto (the second) barked happily and Artemis suddenly had a very, very bad feeling.

It went from one dog to two. M’gann had been serious about getting a dog. Artemis had spent hours trying to convince her to get a practical kind of dog. A lab, a husky, a terrier, or at least a regular size, but M’gann had her heart set on a small dog. Not just small, but tiny…teacup sized even. She wanted a dog that she could carry around with her in a bag, like she’d seen on her shows. She had come across the teacup poodle and had her heart set on one, Artemis had begged her to get a larger size but she wanted a tiny one. Eventually Artemis had given up trying to convince M’gann and helped her find her stupid, tiny dog.

Artemis spent almost two weeks searching for the dog. Robin had used the supercomputer in the Batcave and even then M’gann had been picky. She wanted a white colored one, not just cream or even slightly off-white, she wanted…white. It had taken them ages, more than eight different home visits, until they eventually found one that met M’gann’s standards- Artemis had been slightly relived to find that it’d actually been the largest of the itty bitty dogs, not big enough but it was better than that tiny little thing that had been M’gann’s second choice. Upon arriving home M’gann had introduced her dog- in Martian. Hard as they tried none of them could pronounce the dog’s name and eventually Wally shortened it to T’io and the name stuck- still awkward on the tongue but better than the original name.

Unfortunately Krypto (the second) and T’io got along very well, even if the size difference was quite large. Artemis also found that she was the only one who ended up hating that dog. T’io was a tiny pure white package of evil wrapped in a tiny package of pure villainy. T’io was so tiny that often Artemis found herself nearly tripping over him, stumbling and cursing as she tried to avoid hurting the thing. It was so little- it was….unnatural. M’gann even bought a bag to put T’io in and took to carrying him whenever they went out in human form. M’gann started going out more, and insisted that Artemis show her the various sites that girls usually went to- wrong person to ask but Artemis didn’t have the heart to say no to someone who had literally baked muffins to celebrate getting a puppy. Pink frosted muffins.

That tiny poodle was evil. Artemis knew that, of course no one else seemed to think so. She was the only one who had her things chewed on, or her arrows used as fetch toys, or her spot taken when the poodle just had to sleep somewhere. Once she’d tried getting rid of it, and she’d almost succeeded. Artemis got to the door before M’gann came, saw her with T’io in the bag and burst into a smile- “are you going out somewhere?’

“Uh…to the uh…mall. Thought I’d take T’io…with me.”

“I’ll come with you! You can still carry him though, that is why you brought him, wasn’t it?”

Artemis had then been forced to carry that rat around in that awful pink bag through the mall. Through the whole thing she swore T’io was looking up at her with tiny, beady, evil eyes and gloating. She had stopped trying to sell the thing, M’gann was always so happy that it’d crush her heart if one day she woke up and T’io was gone so Artemis suffered in silence.

That is until Robin brought in his dog. As it turns out they’d had a dog for a while, he’d just never thought they’d be interested. Now with T’io and Krypto (the second) running around the base it occurred to him that he could bring his own dog to the base. Artemis had, for a moment, thought that it would be awful if Robin’s dog also turned out to be small. She had been happily proved wrong. Ace as by far the largest, meanest dog she had ever seen. A large jaw with sharp teeth, short black fur, muscular and fit- that dog looked like he could bite through a steel bar. THAT was what a dog was supposed to look like. It was…unfortunately, that the image was ruined by the neon pink collar scribbled with hearts and little birds that made the little bat shaped tag look very, very out of place.

Robin had coughed awkwardly and muttered something that sounded like, “Timmy made it,” Artemis had no idea who ‘Timmy’ but she wisely stayed silent about the collar.

Ace, as mean and big as he was the dog was a complete and utter softy. Still Artemis liked him way better than T’io and slightly better than Krypto (the second). The three dogs spent hours in the base, Ace never spent the night and was never there the whole time but when he did come over the whole base was lively. In fact, since the addition of the pets, the whole base was a lot livelier whenever Artemis came over. It was…a nice change. Whenever there was a crap mission and they came back to shower, change and report the dogs were always there to greet them, Krypto (the second) yapping and jumping around their heels and T’io a distance away yipping and running excited to M’gann. Red Tornado never once complained about having to watch the dogs- Artemis thought he secretly liked it.

So it came as a surprise when she came in one day and saw a cat lounging on the couch back. For a very long while she stared at the feline. It was bright orange, lighter orange underneath, sleek with a fluffy tail; the only other color was white. A white chin, and paws, one of which it was currently cleaning. Artemis moved and the cat stopped, looked at her with green eyes and then proceeded to ignore her. “Okay…” she muttered.

Walking into the kitchen she looked at Wally and frowned, “That cat’s yours isn’t it?”

“Streaky? Yeah she’s mine.”

Artemis snorted, “Streaky?”

Wally glared, “I was ten okay?”

“Sure, sure…how old were you with Velocity?”

“Oh shut up,” Wally muttered.

Artemis put that in the back of her mind for later. She settled on the couch and found her favorite pet of the lot. Streaky moved from her spot on the back of the couch, leapt into Artemis’s lap, kneaded and made herself comfortable then purred. Not only was she soft and, admittedly, a rather pretty cat- she had spunk. When Superboy and M’gann returned with the dogs, Streaky hadn’t moved. When Krypto (the second) had ran up, yapping, Streaky gave him a small glance and actually yawned. When Krypto (the second) tried to nip the cat moved fast, she puffed up, hissed, and in one swift movement swiped the dog across the nose hard enough to send him yelping back to Superboy’s feet.

Needless to say Streaky was Superboy’s least favorite pet. Artemis found it odd that a cat that Wally- Kid Dork, nerd extreme- could own a cat that was so…BA. It wasn’t until Roy showed up to take the cat to his apartment that she understood. Of course the cat was so aloof and awesome- it was Roy’s not Wally’s. She had subtly asked Robin about it- “Eh, Wally’s mom’s allergic; he didn’t want to give the kitten up so he took it to Roy’s. He says he doesn’t like her, but after she bit Ollie he took a shine to her.”

There was no contest- Streaky was her favorite.

Batman stood there quietly. Superboy had most of the couch, Krypto (the second) curled up on his stomach, and on the last cushion M’gann sat, lightly petting T’io. Sitting in the chair Artemis was eyeing Wally and his two turtles (“Terminal and Velocity?” “I was two!!”) he was feeding lettuce to. Kaldur was in the other chair, reading and petting Streaky- who was curled up and purring loudly in his lap. Roy was leaning against the couch, closer to M’gann than Superboy, at his feet Ace was napping and leaning against Ace was Robin, who was nudging Wally with his foot and trying to get the speedster from spoiling his turtles. The television was playing a movie of some sorts that only M’gann and Superboy were really paying attention to.

All in all a quaint scene- Batman looked at Krypto (the second) who was napping peacefully. He was glad that Superboy had gotten the dog- he would never say it out loud but that dog had done a lot. Not long after “casually” mentioning Krypto (the second) and T’io to the League, somehow Krypto the original had mysteriously appeared at the base and Superman had mysteriously come to fetch him. There had been repeat meetings between the two Krypto’s and the two Super’s. Almost at that same time Dinah had subtly dropped a book of baby names on Clark’s desk in the middle of his work day- both of them had been pleased to see Superman looking through it the next day, so Dinah had then commented that the C’s had some nice names.

Krypto (the second) shifted and Superboy…no…Conner now- today was the first day with his new name. For a moment longer Batman watched them, then without a noise he turned and left as quietly as he’d come- he’d come get Robin later…for now his ward was safe where he was at.
_________
So there ya go. Krypto (the second) is like a Jack Russel Terrier mix, T'io a teacup poodle, Ace a Great Dane mix. In case you hadn't figure. Hope you'd enjoyed.

So much happiness and so much joy. I miss my puppy so much, but I'm glad you reminded me how much love grows with a pet. Also, I LOL'd with Artemis' ambivalence to dogs and hatred of tiny dogs. She really does strike me as being a cat person. Thank you so much for this, AA.

Awww, this was so cute it nearly gave me cavities. Goofy smile permanently stuck to my face. I love that Artemis even tried to get rid of T'io!

There were a lot of missing words and redundant sentence fragments, I noticed. I think you just wrote too quickly for your fingers to keep track of what you were writing, so you should read if over an extra time or get someone to beta read, for future fics. :3 Phenomenal story, though.

I'm glad you liked it, and " nearly gave you cavities"...hmm, I'll just have to try harder next time.

And re-re-reading it...wow, there are quite a few mistakes. (I feel mildly embarrassed now, oh dear...)Still, thank you for mentioning them. Next time I'll go through it with a fine toothed comb, or at least go over it one more time. =)

Too cute. I agree wholeheartedly with Artemis about the serious unnatural wrongness and evil that are teeny, tiny yap dogs. Also, cats are awesome.
