And according to her newly assigned team's reactions, they're not sure what to make of her either.
Admittedly, aside from the mostly harmless bickering between her and Wally, there's not much hostility directed towards her, which is a relief. Her last team knew her too well.
“Artemis,” Arrowette says, a little shyly. It's strange to see a creature so massive tiptoe towards her, as if Artemis might run away if she approached too quickly. “What are you doing?”
“Cloudwatching. You need something?” she asks, twisting her head to meet her dragon's eyes. The Longwing looked away for a moment before turning back.
“No,” Arrowette shakes her head as she sits down on her haunches beside her like an oversized dog. Artemis counts four seconds before the dragon speaks up again. “The others are going out flying. Kaldur and Tempest say they have new formations to fly in, but really, I think they just want to fly with everybody. Will you go flying?”
“Nah,” Artemis shrugs, her back pressed firmly in the soft grass. “I'm pretty comfortable laying where I am.”
“Oh.”
Artemis looks at Arrowette, who seems a bit put out by her answer. “Well?” she asked. “Are you going to go?”
“No,” Arrowette said, sinking into the ground to settle next to Artemis. “I am comfortable laying where you are too.”
She felt warm next to Arrowette. Heat rolled off of the massive creature, and she could feel another sort of warmth, one of pleasure, at Arrowette's presence beside her.
“Well,” Artemis said, sitting up and dusting off any dirt that might have settled on her pants while she'd been cloud-watching, “I can think of better things to stare at than the sky.”
Arrowette perked up happily as Artemis braced her hands against the leather and steel rigging and pulled herself up onto the dragon's back.
“Yes,” the dragon happily agreed, wings unfurling on both their sides. “Roly is growing very handsome.”
Artemis smiled, feeling lighter than usual, and not just because she was airborne now. She never cared much for having friends before, but if Arrowette wanted it, she certainly wasn't going to deny her.

The Grey Widowmaker beneath her pumped his wings in the air beneath her, and she could feel the muscles stretching and pulling as they soared above the sea, the salty air filling M'gann's lungs.
Kaldur! she calls in her mind, to let him know she's ready, and she feels the sea shift beneath them, the waves calming and a fog rising from the water.
The fog rises all around the two of them, obscuring their vision, but neither M'Gann nor the dragon are troubled by their sightlessness.
It's just like they practiced.
The Manhunter's mottled gray and white scales hide them in the mist better than most dragons, who leave faint gray shadows in the air around them. But even if their enemy blended in the fog as well as they, M'gann can track them easily in her mind, following their movements like a missile.
Manhunter tackles an enemy mount out of the air under her silent direction, and all its allies hear are a horrible shriek and a splash in the water. In the water, Kaldur and Tempest are unbeatable, and she knows that the enemy won't be resurfacing again. She can hear the other enemies shouting their confusion as they're attacked in a fog, unable to navigate and find each other.
M'gann targets another dragon, the largest of the group and the most difficult but advantageous to take down, and they charge forward, attacking it from above and tearing at the wings, but even under attack, the Kazilik is difficult to take down and, worse, lights a flame that reveals their position in the fog.
But a stream of water shoots out from the sea, effectively dousing the revealing fire and stunning the Kazilik and his rider enough for Manhunter to push this one into the sea as well for Kaldur to finish off.
M'gann continues to fly forward, ignoring the red that slowly spreads in the water.
-
The battle is over and her friends are safe, and then she allows herself to feel her horror and remorse. She says nothing of her feelings to Kaldur and the rest of her team. Kaldur himself may understand, since his roles are occasionally similar to her own, but she feels childish and petty that she wants to complain.
Wally and Kid Flash always bear the worst of wounds, as most who take point tend to do. As the swiftest in the team, in most of the entire league, he assumes the first and thus the most exposed place in combat, charging into the midst of the enemy to cause confusion. M'gann used to fear for them-still does, in fact-but Dick and Robin always provides good backup, weaving around Wally's straightforward path to distract those who would retaliate at their friends' direct attack, and from a distance, Artemis and Arrowette supports them with their acid and arrows.
Kaldur remains beneath the sea, in the center, always safe and calm and capable of coordinating their attacks as Tempest, like their sharpshooters, strikes from beneath the sea. He aids both their friends in the front line and M'gann in the flank.
M'gann's role isn't nearly as direct as the others. Her skill is in her ability to navigate Manhunter using her telepathic abilities like a massive homing missile, and in Manhunter's ability to hide in the clouds.
They strike like ghosts, unseen and terrifying.
M'gann doesn't enjoy the furtiveness of her role, but she is too skilled to stop.

“You're Roy,” she said. “What do you want?” The team knew better than to bother her during her downtime, and if Ollie's first sidekick was going to pick a fight about her place on the team, she was going to punch the guy, dragon or no.
“Just checking out my replacement,” he replied coolly. “I am not whelmed.”
Artemis gritted her teeth. “Well, you're done checking me out. Go away.”
“Where's your dragon?”
“My god, this isn't going to be a dick measuring contest, is it?” she asked. “Because if it is, let me break it to you: my dragon is bigger.”
“How rude,” his dragon mutters.
- -
“Really? You're here, they're there. Looks like you're not into the whole team bonding thing to me,” Roy said. “You're not even sitting with your dragon. What was her name, Green Arrow 2?”
“Arrowette,” Artemis hissed.
“Hmph. Well, it's more original than Kid Flash, I'll give you that,” Roy smirked. “But I'm not here to nitpick names with you. I'm warning you: your place on Young Justice isn't as secure as you'd like it to be.”

“Wally's uncle could take Flash up to the speed of sound. When Wally tries it on KF? He crashes and burns. Like, literally.”
“Dude!”
- -
“Seriously?” Wally asked. “You guys want to pal around now? We're late.”
“Only by-”
“Fourteen minutes,” a new voice said. Wally recognized that sound of gravel and turned around to see the Dark Knight standing not two feet behind him, staring down at him with those eerie, pants-wetting, nightmarish white eyes.
“Okay, how do you do that?” Wally demanded. From the day he was first introduced to them, Bruce and Dark always managed to sneak up on him from behind. Dark was a Fleur-de-Nuit bred for stealth, his scales a dark blue to blend in with the night, but it was broad daylight, for god's sake, and the twenty-one ton beast never made a single noise when he was creeping up on them.
All of a sudden, Dick and Robin were standing next to him with a wide grin on his face. “Magic,” the younger man said. Wally's dragon rolled his eyes.
- -
“Nightwing? What happened to Robin?” KF asked.
“Robin?” Nightwing repeated. He lowered his head so that he was a foot away from Dick's face-which was pretty up close and personal for a dragon. “Who's Robin?”
“Dude, are you two-timing a dragon? Seriously, not the smartest move,” Wally said until Dick elbowed him.
“Shut up,” he growled through clenched teeth.
- -
“So you're interdimensional time travelers?” Wally said skeptically. “No. No way, I'm not buying it. Magic doesn't exist.”
“Oh, yeah? Well neither do dragons.”
“Ex-cuse me,” KF said indignantly.
“You heard me, lizard.”

This is brilliant and wonderful. Just so you know. I really like how to blended everything together so perfectly. And the bonuses? Win.

"I am afraid I am not rich enough a partner for you; I will not be able to give you a heap of gold to sleep on."
"I should rather have you than a heap of gold, even if it were very comfortable to sleep on," Temeraire said. "I do not mind the deck."
He said it quite normally, not in the least as though he meant to deliver a compliment, and immediately went back to looking at his clouds; Laurence was left gazing after him in a sensation of mingled amazement and extraordinary pleasure.
It was so simple and sweet. *rereads His Majesty's Dragon*

Guh, I can't even choose which part of this is my favorite. Maybe Conner's because omg he's just adorable when it comes to pets. I will die forever if he names his newly acquired ballpet on the show Roly as well. XD Seriously, that would be perfect. Did you plan that on purpose? LOL.
And M'gann! She's so badass here, even if she doesn't quite enjoy what she does. :[ The part about her ignoring the blood spreading in the water beneath her was really... striking. The whole scene with Robin attempting to save the Graysons was perfect as well. I could see it all in my mind--and at the pace you set it up in too!--kind of like how I could almost feel the warmth Artemis was feeling beside Arrowette.
Kaldur's part was really sweet. >u< I love how Tempest is so playful and curious; their personalities mesh so well together, and the part where Tempest tackles Kaldur? I squee'd. T___T I also squee'd at the fact that Wally named his dragon KF. Looool. That boy really is creative. XD And Barry cracking up at him: AAAWWWW.
And the extras! LMFAO.
“My god, this isn't going to be a dick measuring contest, is it?” she asked. “Because if it is, let me break it to you: my dragon is bigger.”
“How rude,” his dragon mutters.
I DIED AT THIS. LOLOLOL. Oh, Artemis. And Roy. They're precious together, despite all the snarking. XD
On a sidenote, this also reminded me of that one scene in JLU where Batman says, "Mine are bigger than yours," to Amanda Waller with this huge sneer on his face. XD
And Dick two-timing Robin with Nightwing. THIS IS JUST. LMAO. Wth, Dick, wth. XDD
Lol, sorry for the long comment, but I just couldn't leave without addressing all the things I loved about you this, so um yeah. I am gonna be rereading this like a thousand times now, thank you.

And yeah, the Roly thing was totally on purpose. I never got around to writing it, but I was originally thinking Roly would have Superboy's anger issues, but then I was like, noooo, you can't have a fat round dragon with anger issues because it just doesn't go together. So my head-cannon says that Roly is adorkable, and Conner's the one with the (occasional) anger issues. Originally, the name was going to be Bally, but then I was like, "Oh god, that sounds like Wally". And almost went with it anyway, for the sake of bad rhyming jokes.
And while I didn't have much inspiration when I was writing M'gann's piece, I basically took her character from my own head here too, where her powers are extremely useful, but mostly in combat related situations. I mean, telekinesis is useful like super-speed and superstrength where it's totally applicable in real life and mundane things, but her ability to become invisible is generally more important in situations like sabotage--which, with M'gann's personality, is an interesting combination, to say the least.
I wasn't sure if Robin's scene was over the top narm, so in the end, rather than having her go apeshit crazy on Zucco or "Dick is mine, humans can't have him" like I had planned, I decided to end it on the quieter and more open ended note.
Artemis's bit gave me the fuzzies. I have a soft spot for bonding fics where there's no plot, just two characters hanging out and bantering. In the original draft, Roy actually goes to Artemis and is, like, "wth, play with your dragon, dummy", as part of it was seen in the extra, but I couldn't get it to feel right, so I traded it out and made it so that Artemis is still a little awkward dealing with her new dragon (though, being Artemis, is totally cool about it so no one would ever know if she was uncomfortable about anything), but she's accepting the fact that she's basically got a kid now--a giant, acid-spitting, scaley, carnivorous 8-ton kid with wings.
Kaldur's was the easiest to write, possibly because it was the first that I started on, but also because Tempest is so good at being adorable and I love adorable. Not much to say about his and KF's, actually. It just felt so right, even though saying that makes me feel a little arrogant.
And yeah, Artemis's dragon is larger, based on both the fact that her dragon is older than his, and that her dragon is a Longwing, which is a middleweight dragon that'll grow to be 10-18 tons, and that Roy's dragon is a Flecha-del-Fuego, which'll only grow up to be 6-10, a light combat dragon. But his breathes fire, so he's still cool. Fun fact: his name is Arsenal, which was Roy's second alias. And originally spoke with a Spanish accent before I cut that out.
I've gotta rewatch that scene in JLU. I only recently found out my friend has the entire series on DVD. *will be looking for that episode*
And yeah, you better be sorry about the long comment. Now look at what you made me do. (Because seriously, I can't not respond to comments, and lengthy ones are my kryptonite.) And I have better things to do than respond to crazy-long comments. No I don't.

I want MOAR! You can't do just a paragraph with an AU crossed with the real show (At least, that's what I assume that was), you've gotta do, like, a sequel!!! Please?
