Fight and Flight (mini-fill #3) anonymous June 22 2011, 01:44:10 UTC
It had been three years since Kalda had left the ocean, but she adapted to the currents far more quickly than she had ever adapted to the surface.

The sounds of fighting trembled through the water from a nearby trench. She swam over, intending to, if nothing else, observe. Beyond the ridge were several figures, all moving too quickly for her to get a good look.

The man with the trident seemed to be winning, waves of energy striking at the other man and his ally, a boy her own age.

In three years of training and practice, Kalda had had barely any chance to test her abilities. Her fingers twitched a little next to her gauntlet.

The electric blast hit the trident-wielding one with all the force of an angry shark, allowing the other two to defeat him, knocking him out. As the older one turned in the Kalda’s direction, she was able to see that it was King Orin whom she had helped. That was… unintended.

The boy turned too, smiling at his apparent ally. Aquaman also wore a small grin, welcoming enough that Kalda could see why his followers liked him so much.

The two smiles drew her in, like the light of an anglerfish of the deeper parts of the sea. But Kalda knew what happened to the smaller fish who got too close to the pretty light.

She fled.

Garth hid a sigh of disappointment as the girl who had helped them swam away. He started to follow, but was stopped by King Orin’s hand on his shoulder.

“Relax,” the king gave an understanding chuckle. “I have a feeling we will be seeing her again.”

Garth nodded. Seeing that the young student wasn’t going to go off after their mysterious ally, Orin continued.

“Your bravery in the fight was impressive…”

Fish Fact: Four months after Garth becomes Aqualad, Black Manta and his sidekick, Mantalass, attack Poseidonis and are thwarted but not caught. Kalda is pretty practical about the fact that her main enemy is a cute boy her age, and may or may not troll him from time to time. Garth… isn’t as sensible. XD

Oh wow, this is really great, you can see a lot of Kaldur in Kalda, but with some really substantial differences. I especially love the temptation to go to Gasrth and Aquaman, which was tempered by the comparison to anglerfish. <3 And the idea of Kalda trolling Garth with flirting he's not sure how to handle is just amazing.
