ok... i get why people think juno is a cute movie. and i realize the academy awards ceremony means nothing, for all practical purposes. but as a film student/film lover/overall asshole, i cannot believe it is one of the BEST films produced this year. i mean, that IS what's supposedly being celebrated at this ceremony, right? so, by the academy's logic, juno is better than the assassination of jesse james. disappointing though expectedly so.
also disappointing: the coachella lineup. but i won't waste time whining about that, as i just got home from work and should probably go to sleep.
not disappointing: ryan adams on monday, for several reasons: the acoustics were so much better at the arlington, my seats were so much closer, the setlist was so much better (i.e. i'm almost positive not a single song was played off 29) and the opener was... ryan adams, singing solo and acoustic before the rest of the cardinals came out. neal casal sung lead vocals for one of the songs as well (cue mass audience pilgrimage to the bar, but whatever). oh, and he wasn't all slouched over, this time. i think i saw him drink 8 red bulls before opening a diet coke, and the sugar high was ridiculously apparent in both the performance and the banter in between songs (an indescribable blend of necrophilia, witchcraft, boxer briefs, disco and barbs about his recent ex-girlfriend). just one complaint, really: i want to hear some goddamn whiskeytown.
i'm excited for the santa barbara international film festival, which starts friday! it's gonna be a crazy couple of weeks, trying to go to as many screenings as possible while still fitting in the insane amount of reading and filmwatching i already have to do for my classes. i cannot wait to see who's gonna be at the director's panel... they still haven't announced it, but the other attendees are pretty impressive, so my hopes are high (to be crushed by jason reitman, probably).
