thanksgiving wasn't bad... especially with the uncensored thanksgiving rap mix my brother and i made to entertain ourselves. i think my grandparents must be hard of hearing, because they weren't as offended as we had hoped. being home and acting incredibly stupid with little (shit, is he really taller than me now?) nicky is always fun. and wine makes everything better! right? right.
it's been a lovely couple of days home, mostly spent at oak canyon park or at the agoura starbucks (or hiding away upstairs listening to bowie). time warp, back to 2005. unfortunately, since i want to go out and see everyone friday and saturday, i'm gonna have to get a nice start on this paper that's due tuesday. and that other one that's due wednesday about a book i have yet to start. and the review of the replacements biography/oral history that's due monday. crap? uh yeah. i should also probably e-mail my ta and ask if i missed him handing back proposals last week.
good news about school? apparently charles bukowski sold a ton of his original manuscripts to ucsb in 1985 for $5,000. and those documents are available at ucsb's main library. third floor, special collection. so i am going to have to go check those out asap. brandy says you can even see his food stains (hopefully food stains) on the pages.
i finally saw the darjeeling limited, which i enjoyed. obviously, since it's wes anderson, it was beautifully shot and hyperstylized and full of wonderful kinks songs and a vivid color palatte... not to say it was completely lacking elsewhere. the dry humor was a wonderful break from the monotony of paper-writing before i came home on tuesday, even if it wasn't completely memorable. a lot of people hold it up against the royal tenenbaums, and i do enjoy that film as well, but it wasn't completely perfect either. ben stiller is near the top of the list of actors i really, semi-irrationally hate (don't worry, robin williams, you're still number one). i realized lately how few films i've seen this year, when usually i make a ridiculous point of seeing way more than i should.
the only decent films i've caught this year... i really hope i'm forgetting something amazing.
2 days in paris
the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford (wonderful)
the darjeeling limited
grindhouse (bloody fun, but not really "best of" worthy)
the lookout (one of the better ones i've seen so far)
once (yes!!!)
