i think this post is a long time coming.
firstly i have to point out the fact that i am not a christian. my post today centers on christians in singapore as i believe many of them to be mutants of the genuine christian faith in other parts of the world.
y do i believe that u ask?
i'm a buddhist and tho i confess to not be making enuff regular trips to the temple, i believe a faith should not dictate the way u should carry on your life. i'm not interested in sitting down n hafing a factual debate between the 2 religions cos i dun profess to knowing alot abt either. wot i do haf are friends n family who are christians and this is what i know abt them.
i know that many s.christians try to hardsell their religion. there is a mention of God in every conversation. and yes i did say God with capital G cos that's the respectful way is that not? that is another thing that irks me. i'm a buddhist and i try to respect all faiths as best i can. i was in a christian kindergarten and later in a catholic primary & secondary school so i know to bow my head in silence when everyone is in prayer & listen in respect to sermons. but yet i have been in private buddhist functions with s.christians who twirl the sacred prayer string around their toes, who refuse to touch joss sticks to pay respects to the departed, who insist on sharing private jokes n tok loudly amongst themselves when buddhist prayers are in session. y? cos they haf a point to prove - that their religion is supreme.
this has nothing to do with religion anymore. u don't love God more by putting down another religion. does God not teach you to love each other? i'm sure there is one which tells u not to judge. go check ur bible.
i've toked with christians from other countries and when i mention such behaviour by the singaporean christians i know, they are appalled. i'm not toking one or two of them either. its a whole bunch of unrelated individuals!
of cos i do have buddies who are s.christians but we're friends first and members of our respective religions second. we dun sneak in a lecture abt our faiths with every chance we get. it's called being respectful. we dun believe the other needs saving. we're just interested in enjoying each other's friendship. i think many s.christians are missing the pt.
if someone is interested in ur religion, they will ask. there is no need for recruitment. knocking on doors at dinner time to preach a religion is as irritating as a telemarketer calling to ask if u're interested in a new insurance plan from XYZ so haf a long think abt this before u knock on ur next door.
