Room 403; Saturday Morning (really!) - [ 05/19 ].

It was inevitable. She knew something like this would happen eventually, but, somehow, Fawn thought perhaps it was all just going to skip over her and she could continue thinking that this Freak School didn't get any freakier than little teachers, hermaphrodite students, time travel and probably aliens ( Read more... )

Whether her crying was loud enough to be heard by someone clopping past in the hall, or it was just an incredibly vague example of Ace's incredibly vague moments of psychic sensitivity, or Ace would just take any excuse to put off trying the stairs on these feet, the world may never know.

Whatever; it resulted in a soft banging of a pony-nose against the door, since this particular equine didn't have a horn for knocking. "Oi - you turn into a horse in there too?"

Fawn sob cut off in a gasp as someone banged on the door, and she sniffled and wished she had hands rather than hooves to wipe away the snot probably dripping from her nose. At first, she thought of not saying anything at all, and then she decided just to lie.

"No!" she called. "No horses here!"

Any sensitivity Ace might have possessed was sadly (and demonstrably, looking at her life) not oriented toward picking up when people were lying to her.

"Brill! You can come out and press the lift button for me, then!"

....crap.

Fawn considered this for a moment, sniffed the last of her tears away for now, and bit her lip. Once she realized how big and blunt her teeth were like this, she made sure to bite down extra hard, too.

"What if I can't because I'm a paraplegic?" she offered through the door. And realized she wasn't sure what a lift button was, anyway.

Ace's own brain was reasonably ok at picking up when people were lying to her, though. "If you're paraplegic I'm pretty sure you have to be able to make the lift work, else how'd you get up here?"

Fawn narrowed her eyes at the door; at least the contention of wits was allowing her to forget about crying for a little bit.

"Maybe my wheelchair is in the shop," she said. "There's dozens of other doors out there. Get someone else to push the lift button for you."

"Suit yourself," Ace said, or, well, whinnied. Just a bit. "Just thought if you were a horse, you might like to know you're not the only one. But since you're just a paraplegic with a wheelchair in the shop, guess I'll carry on..."

"Okay," called Fawn, since, really, she clearly knew she wasn't the only one anyway and she didn't really figure she was to begin with; in her case, misery did not love company, because she was always miserable. "Sounds good. Good luck."

That second thump was not Ace knocking again; it was just the pony equivalent of a head-desk, before she clopped on down the hall.
