I think we can all agree I suck at keeping this journal up, though I'm doing better this year. Heh.
I just found this entry that I wrote a while ago, and I think I'll go ahead and post it reeeally late... I believe it's from February of this year. It was certainly at the beginning of my last semester, some time when I was way into the BBC's Robin Hood... So, I will post it now, even though it's waaaay out of date!
So far, I really like my classes. I think this semester is gonna be a lot of fun. Although unless I can pick up ballet and drop my REES class (which would be a little sad, because it's an awesome class), it's gonna be a hella hard semester.
I forgot how tired I get everyday, when I'm actually doing things. I mean, I think the first week of classes is always though, getting back into the swing of things, but this week I've been way more tired than I have any right to be!
I rediscovered the other day that I really love snow. This...
But then that one day of warm weather was torture! It felt like spring! I expected to see a robin hopping by, and crocuses poking out of the soil. But instead, we get a few more months of freaking cold.
Oh, technology and teachers. There seems to be a cutoff around age 34 where teachers cannot truly understand computers (in certain fields; I'm sure in engineering and the sciences this is more rare). And there's nothing like the awkwardness of a classroom full of students watching a teacher try to get the powerpoint/video/website/program to work, when we can all see what they're doing wrong, but don't feel like mentioning it... if they don't get it right in a minute, one of us will speak up. "You've put a dash in the URL." "You minimized FireFox." "You don't have to close the window every time you want to go back to the last folder." "Try plugging it in." (All except for that last one have actually happened in a class I was in recently.) It's awkward for us, but I'm sure it's even more uncomfortable for them! And I'm also sure that a lot of it is just that there's a room full of people watching them. That would make them less observant and more nervous, and we're just sitting there with nothing better to do than watch them and judge them.
The long double-jointed buses have begun making this horrible alarm noise when they go around the corners. This started some time over break apparently, and it's really annoying. It sounds like a car alarm. I don't see why it's needed - we can all hear the buses coming as it is. But whatever...
And because I took the time to write it, I am going to put the "25 Things" meme that's going around facebook here, too. If you want to, you can do the same thing on your blog.
1. I love wearing dresses! I almost wish I had been born in the distant past, just so it would be socially acceptable to wear awesome dresses all the time. As it is, I like to wear them when at all possible.
2. Speaking of wishing I had been born in the past; when I was young I honestly did wish I had been born in the past. When I was going through my colonial American period, I wished it had been then, but the desired date fluctuated. Now I kind of think I should have been alive in the 1940's... the clothes, the dancing, the men in uniform... (but then I'd be old now, and I wouldn't like that...).
3. I have a book buying addiction. Seriously, if I go into a bookstore, I will probably not leave without buying a few books. They don't even necessarily have to be books I love or I think are awesome... some of my collection are ones that the cover is gorgeous, and a big bunch are just ones that were really cheap and seemed okay. Mostly, though, I'm pretty picky about what I like. Which means that I own a bunch of books that I will probably never read! hmmm...
4. My middle name, Grace, is my Great-grandmother's first name. My older sister Michelle's middle name is Kathryn (my Grandmothers name) and my oldest sister Kristiana’s middle name is Emily, our Mother's name. So, our middle names go in reverse age order. (Although it skips over to the other side of the family). And this wasn't even planned!
5. I would really like to have twins, once I start having babies.
6. I've always wanted to be bilingual. Recently, I've thought that I might be satisfied with knowing a few different languages pretty well, instead.
7. When I was little I had a stuffed dog who I named Nice Doggy (because he was) and a baby doll named Baby Dear (I think that was her name on the box; I just assumed that meant that was her name). I think those names are kind of cool. I lost Baby Dear a few times, and it always made me sad when she was lost... she always turned up, though!
8. If I could have a superpower, I would pick Cup Hand, the superpower that Emily (Lux) came up with one night for an icebreaker, which we have always remembered. This superpower is a very practical one, and one that could be used so often. Basically, whenever someone is freaking out, or behaving irrationally, a cup of water appears in your hand so you can dash it in their face and say: "Pull yourself together, woman!" And then they would. It would also be handy when you're thirsty! Or perhaps if you're trapped in the desert.
9. I'm really interested in Eastern Europe, and would love to spend time there!
10. "The Hobbit" (JRR Tolkien) (you better have known that already) was the first big book that I remember reading to myself. I was 11 years old, and I read it in two days. (Yeah, homeschooling!)
11. Most of what I know about public High School I learned from movies and television. There are a lot of common shared experiences pertaining to HS that I just don't know... and I'm fine with that.
12. My three siblings and one sibling-in-law are my best friends! It's always been that way.
13. I'm the youngest of all of my family on my Dad's side. Well, out of my generation of cousins... Jaiden and Samuel and Baby Morrison beat me now! :)
14. I love taking baths. When I was little, my Mom would pop me in the tub to keep me amused for a few hours. I remember lots of good times in that lovely big bathtub, with water toys, singing "Splish, Splash" and "Baby Beluga" and that one that goes "Swim little fishy, swim if you can! And they swam, and they swam, right over the dam…" Anyway, I still love baths. Long baths with reading and snacks...
15. The first TV show I loved was "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (which explains my grown-up love of sci-fi and fantasy). I started watching it before I can really remember, and was a fan from the start. I still know a lot about it, although not nearly as much as Erick has forgotten.
16. I was quite the pudgy and awkward pre-teen. I'm really glad so many people were so nice to me back then, because I think I was pretty annoying.
17. I can't remember a time when I was ever made fun of (hurtfully), by anyone. I also can't remember a time when someone I cared about insulted or belittled me.
18. I love cooking, and baking. I can make a mean cake... but sadly, since I started college, I haven't really had much time for it.
19. I've been told by a few people that I look like an "Abigail". I assume they meant the name, not that I look like a maid/servant/dresser.
20. When I'm reading a book, I start thinking in the dialect of whatever that book is... and sometimes almost use it in conversation, which could be a little awkward. Right now, it's Regency England, so I wish I could be saying things like "Now that's doing it a little too brown!" [Yeah, right!] and "You're foxed!" [You're drunk!]
21. I was in a local musical that my church did at the Virginia Theater when I was 8 years old. My only line was: "Well, there it is!" My favorite part was the scene where we all drowned, near the end; although it was hard not to cough (after you were supposed to be dead) with all the dry ice fog (which smelled like strawberry shortcake).
22. I've always thought it would be cool if I married someone with the last name of Wells. Then I'd be H.G. Wells.
23. I really want to own a castle someday. Or at least a big house with secret passages, and an old garret or attic with treasures to sort through!
24. If I had a ton of money right now, I would go on a trip to the UK (England and Ireland especially), and then Europe (France, Germany, Czech Republic...) and Norway. I would also buy a MacBook Pro and a Canon Rebel (camera).
25. I used to take tap dance and baton twirling... and I think I could probably do it again now, if I had a little time. Maybe not both at the same time! :)
