I have not posted for a hell of a long time what have I been up to...
Well I moped a bit after coming back from Thailand in Feb, I had a wonderful time and didn't really want to come back to the heaviness of reality.
A couple of weeks ago I went into hospital; the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital - and had a total hysterectomy via laproscopic oopherectomy, commonly known as keyhole surgery. This was done because I inherited a BRCA mutation that elevated my chances of ovarian cancer from the normal %2 or thereabouts to approximately %80. So they whipped the whole caboodle out. I can now walk without painkillers and am pretty much on the road to normal.
Last weekend I went to the Brisbane supernova, that might have been overexerting a leetle bit - about 7 hours of walking and standing..... no not wise, but I did have a pretty good time. There were lots of tables representing small comic artists and publishers where I spent most of my time, there were also mainstream comics, anamae, guest speakers and a vast number of costumed Geeks. It was good but I am very thankful I took a cane to lean on. Compared with the costumes I certainly didn't stand out with it.
Some of the links that I got out of it;
I bought a comic put together by Brisbane artist/writer team based on Australian historic storys called 'Kate Lawson and the ship of lost souls'. It is the first of a series with a distinct indiana jones/x files influence. I rarely buy black and white comics on old style comic paper any more but I made an exception for this one.
http://www.phosphorescent.com.au/comics/ By the same publishers I got a trade paper back called Witch King with a cute anti-hero story line, spectacularly polished artwork that is its own justification. Apparently one of five and I am looking forward to the next. It is reviewed at greater depth here;
http://www.phosphorescent.com.au/forum/index.php?topic=35.0#story2 At the table next to it was the multinamed artist who had worked on Witch King representing another comic label;
http://www.localactcomics.com.au/At that table I acquired a couple of small comics and also purchased a storyboard/ original artwork for 'the cyst reborn'. It is very much a geek/boy-comic, kind of fun with good artwork though there is a tendency for the storyline to dissolve without warning.
A really cool stall dedicated to resin Ball-Jointed dolls, the hobby of constructing them ect. This was fascinating and the results were beautiful. Not too sure about this link, but it was on the fact sheet they handed out.
http://www.RavenSilverwing.com/ And there was lots more, might write about it some other time.
