Ringing It All In

The 9 Days of the New Year: A Belated Report
(or, Why It's So Hard to Wake Up in the Mornings)

What can I say - 2003 went off with a bang, I hit the ground running, and have hardly had time to look back since. Recapture the first 9 days then, while I try to get some sleep.

Day 0 (Changeover Day): It's kinda funny how J and I just love being on the move. Even something as simple as renting a car for a few days and driving about works as a holiday of sorts for us. So we picked up the car today, bought a sofa (some last-minute deal) for the new place, and found the rather yummy Lana-esque choc cake from a shop in Joo Chiat called Awfully Chocolate for the night. Had dinner at Jappie restaurant in East Coast, walked up and down the beach. Time seemed to pass real slow.

Changeover moment: parked right next to the airport runway along the road to Changi Village. Landing planes begin their deafening descent right over your heads, it's a great sight. In attendance: me and J, S and Earnest (New Year's Resolution 1), Ade and Gurjeet. Everyone was almost late but we got everything set up just in time. We parked our cars side by side, put candles on the cake and opened the wine. Countdown with the radio. Happy New Year. Such a small moment, almost imperceptible. Bright pink flares shot into the sky by nearby ships along the coastline. Wine and cake and cheer. Lots of photo taking. Watching the planes. A good night.

Day 1: Go to the Mattresses! J stayed the night at my place and we slept like the dead. Woke up early to drive to town with my mum and sister to check out the New Year sales at Robinsons. Turns out that my mother has gotten the time wrong and we are a full hour early for the sale (not that we need to queue or anything, we're actually just buying a mattress for the new place). We read the papers and have tea in Burger King while waiting for things to open up. Shops open: buy the mattress (v.good discount), shop around a bit. Go for lunch. J and I take off and drive around some more.

*yawn* Boy, I'm tired. (New Year's Resolution 2: To sleep earlier.) Will continue this soon.
