It looks like February will be the month of sickies for us all at home. Just as well J and I didn't make any travel plans for this half-term break because both the children are sick again and I'm still coughing from the first bug that Bao had a few weeks ago. It's just a merry-go-round of passing the bug and I can't keep track of who passed what to whom. We're all just sick.
Our usual paediatrician is also on vacation this week so I called another medical centre which had a paediatrician there. Thankfully we managed to get an appointment. The Bun was his usual doctor phobic self and cried when I told him that we would be seeing a different doctor. The appointment was in the afternoon and every hour or so he would ask me the same questions over and over again: what would the doctor be like? what will he do? etc.
I really can't pin down exactly when The Bun developed this fear of doctors, probably before he turned two. All of his doctors have always been friendly and nice to him but he can't bear it anyway. I think it's not so much the doctor he fears because he's fine with being in the same room as the doctor, speaking to them; he just freaks out once they try to touch him. Rationally he can now understand that doctors are there to help him get better, but just the thought of seeing one reduces him to tears.
Just as well then that both kids needed to see the doctor for essentially the same symptoms. Bao went first and The Bun got to observe the entire examination, so by the time his turn came he was a bit more prepared. This really helped because there were no tears from him today at all. He complied with all the doctor's requests and completed the whole examination without crying. That's a good step in the right direction, and I praised him all the way home.
So: Bao has bronchiolitis (aka RSV) which explains her never-ending cough so it's yet another round of ventolin again. The doctor also prescribed chest physiotherapy which took me a little by surprise, but I do remember reading about this on a parenting blog (can't remember which one now) that the technique that loosens the mucus in the child's chest is quite popular amongst French doctors. I have a prescription for it but I don't have a physiotherapist yet. The one recommended by our doctor today is on vacation as well, wouldn't you know it. Anyway Bao's not really in bad shape so it's not so urgent; I'm going to see if I can get a recommendation for one and then take it from there.
The Bun has a viral infection and was prescribed the usual medications to help him with his cough. Also, he has mild conjunctivitis that is probably related to the virus that he has. That's being dealt with in the form of an ointment so I hope we see an improvement soon.
We're not happy campers at home at all. Everyone's cranky and both the children have very bad appetites. I'm hoping that things pick up soon so we can enjoy at least a long weekend before school starts again.
