passing the bug

I got a call this morning from The Bun's school telling me he was having a bit of diarrhoea and could I come and get him? I wasn't surprised since it's clear that the stomach bug has made a new home in him. When I arrived at school the kids had just finished playtime outdoors and were lining up to return to their classrooms. The Bun is really such a spacey kid - I walked right up to him before he even noticed me, although his classmates were giggling and waving as I approached.

After an hour of vegetating in front of the TV and some rolling around in bed feeling sorry for himself, he obviously felt better because after lunch he was bouncing around the apartment with plenty of energy. I took both kids out to the new supermarket that's opened nearby and let them run around in the open pedestrian area until it got too cold. I think he's going to be fine since he hasn't had any more poopy episodes since the morning, but we're keeping him home from school tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

Today was also Bao's first poop-free day in… a week? Her mood is also better although her appetite still hasn't picked up, but as long as she's bright-eyed and happy, that's good enough for me.

I was supposed to go for a Mums' Night Out gathering with some of the friends from playgroup, but at the last minute we heard from the hostess that her grandmother had suddenly passed away and she needed to travel to Paris for the funeral, so our gathering was postponed. Instead I went out for some late-night shopping after putting the kids to bed. The sales are on but I didn't buy anything spectacular unless you consider a jumbo box of diapers on sale a good buy.

Still, it was nice to be out on my own just doing things at my own pace, like browsing the CDs in a music store. It's been ages since I've done that. I now wish I had shipped more of my CDs over since I play the same ones over and over again in the car. I could always run them off my phone but that's not really what I want, either. There's something special about sliding a shiny disc into the player and investigating the liner notes in the case, layer by layer. I realised this when I was flipping through the CDs in the store and heard the satisfying plastic thwack of each jewel case hitting the others as I browsed. It took me right back to my teens when I used to spend all my time in music stores flipping through the rows of discs looking for whatever indie band it was that caught my fancy. Do teenagers still do this or is it really an iTunes world now? Pity.

Now that I have proven to be as old as I claim I shall go relax in front of the TV before bed.
