congressional for the soul

J and I took Bao to the doctor yesterday to get her bili levels checked while my mother babysat The Bun. Like her brother was at birth, Bao is jaundiced. We're hoping that her levels don't peak so high that she has to be hospitalised for phototherapy, but we'll see how things go in the coming days.

Since Bao was sleeping so peacefully in her carseat after the doctor's visit, we decided to stop by a nearby cafe that I've been meaning to try - Henry Congressional. It's located at the Henry Park Apartments estate in Holland Grove and since the entire estate has been sold en-bloc, all the shops there have either moved out or closed down, with a few places holding on until their leases expire in January. The folks who opened Henry Congressional did it knowing that they would have to shut the place in six months, so I guess their cafe has a kind of 'pop-up' concept.

Henry Congressional
Out of all the new boutique cafes all over Singapore which are styled in the vintage-retro way, I like Henry's the best. The terrazzo floor tiles especially bring back a lot of memories of my grandmother's flat which has the same sort of flooring. All the decor is put together with the knowledge that it's not meant to last, but instead of looking cheap or temporary it looks particularly clean and fresh while holding on to that nostalgic vibe.

First cafe experience, five days old.
I couldn't have any coffee (although I sneaked a sip of J's flat white) so I had a hot chocolate and we shared a slice of pandan chiffon cake, one of my favourite things to eat. While Bao slept, we leafed through magazines, admired the decor, and enjoyed the peace. It felt a bit like I was a teenager secretly breaking curfew but what's another half hour when one is already out of the house anyway?

belly happy, quotidian
