give me beef

Nov 10, 2012 16:26

Maybe it's my body's way of gearing up for action, but for the last few days I have been seriously craving red meat, namely beef. I thought I'd eaten my fair share at J's birthday dinner earlier this week, but no - I followed that up with a double cheeseburger from McD's (sorry, Bao, but Mom's gotta eat what she's gotta eat), another burger at the Marmalade Pantry after my doctor's appointment on Thursday, and YET another one for lunch today, at Omakase Burger.

Omakase Burger is located at the Grandstand, previously known as Turf City. The entire place is going through a remodeling and there are now a heap of cafes and restaurants, all geared towards its surrounding demographic, if you know what I mean, but it's a quick drive from our place and goodness knows there's already so little to choose from in the neighbourhood. Anyway, today was our second time at the restaurant, and I had specifically requested it because the first time round I elected to share a burger with J and it hadn't been enough. Left wanting more, the craving sat at the back of my mind for some time before rearing its head again.

The burger looks a bit weeny here, but it's actually a decent portion.

Mmmm beef.
Omakase in Japanese actually means 'as you please, chef' and the idea is that you trust the chef to select the best ingredients to make the finest meal he can for you. I like burgers, even when my tastebuds are not fueled by cravings, and I particularly like the ones here - moist with enough char, proper fresh veggies, and complemented with a very slightly sweet bun. I think some might find the accompanying 'secret Omakase sauce' a bit on the salty side, but I think it actually brings out the flavour of the beef nicely. We had sweet potato fries to share, and while they were uneven in terms of crunch (some were more crisp than others), they were all tender and melt-in-the-mouth inside.

We ordered The Bun a kid's meal ($13.90), which consisted of a mini-cheeseburger, a small serving of fries, and a glass of freshly-squeezed OJ. Proper OJ that you get to see coming directly out of the oranges, not a plastic bottle. The Bun is generally not a big meat eater, and he must have been hungry today (we washed the car together in the morning) because he polished off the entire meal. Just when I thought I could sneak extra bites of his burger.

Omakase's prices are not cheap (the adult's burger alone without fries and drink starts at $13.90) but their burgers definitely hit the spot for me. I'll probably be back for an indulgent meal soon, with two kids in tow by then, erk!

food, belly happy
