four years after the fact, junsu still dreams of bora bora. he dreams of water between his toes, a warm breeze on his back, the sun shining down on his face, and fingers twisted together above the sand. he dreams of full lips on his, of a comforting arm slung over his shoulder, of stolen kisses and carefree embraces. junsu dreams of bora bora, of a happily ever after that could never be, of a paradise lost in the pursuit of a lifelong ambition, of possibilities never to reveal themselves. whether or not it was the right decision to step back into reality is still unclear to him, because he's got no wrong decision to compare it to. so he longs for bora bora, dreaming up what ifs to a life he gave up, that he and no one else will have a chance to understand.

"What... exactly are they trying to say?" Tiffany asks, in English because she doesn't want HeeChul to attack her in defense of his pronunciation. She and Jessica have been dragged in to listen to a preview of Super Junior's latest song, but most of the band is running around rehearsing the dance moves (or making up their own in HeeChul's and YehSung's case) and making a general noisy nuisance of themselves so that the audio is only vaguely audible behind their loud voices screaming the lyrics.

Jessica shrugs. "The song is called 'Sorry Sorry'..."

"But it doesn't sound like that at all!" Tiffany whines. "Besides," she continues, after a pause, "this is a dance song. What are they apologizing for?"

"Being as sexy as we are," KiBum replies, coming up behind them and resting his elbow on Tiffany's shoulder in the most obnoxiously painful manner he can.

Tiffany shoves his arm off and swings a leg half-heartedly in the general direction of his shins. "Ew, weren't you a bum just a week ago?"

Jessica snickers and tugs KiBum away from Tiffany before a skirmish can start. No doubt the rest of the Super Junior members would rush to his defense and Tiffany doesn't need thirteen boys crushing her leg. "No offense, but Tiff's got a point. You guys don't sound like you're saying 'sorry' at all. It sounds more like..."

"Shawty?" Tiffany supplies, crossing her arms in a pathetic attempt at looking like a hardcore gangster. "I think that's more appropriate, anyway, if you're going to slut around on stage."

"You're probably right. But I didn't write the lyrics."

"Who says you have to follow the lyrics exactly?"

"Tiffany never does," Jessica agrees. "Why don't you just convince everyone to do it the sexy way, and blame their bad English later. 'Shorty shorty' is a lot more seductive than 'sorry sorry'."

"I'm sure once you get HeeChul oppa behind it, it'll be a breeze."

KiBum takes a moment to consider, then flicks his finger against Tiffany's forehead.

"Ow!"

"You've got a point." It doesn't take much effort to hold her back, his height and longer limbs working to his advantage.

there are days changmin wakes up forgetting where he is, residue of a past confusion blurring his vision as he reaches for his glasses and tries to orient himself by figuring out who's lying in the next bed. (in japan he shared a room with yunho, in korea a room with junsu.) when he realizes there is no other bed besides his own, he recalls himself to the present and stubbornly brushes away the memories of a past long gone.

some mornings changmin is so tired he dozes off in the shower. when he returns to his senses, he is always in a rush to finish up, half expecting a line outside the door. ('what took you so long?' junsu would ask, and shove him aside to waddle awkwardly in for a piss. 'you should get more sleep,' yoochun would advise, ruffling his hair on his way past him.) but there is never anyone there when he finally emerges from the steamy confines of his private bathroom, and he walks down the hall to his room in an awkward silence.

when changmin goes shopping, he always buys more than he can eat. the appetite he had at sixteen is now gone at the age of twenty-eight, and there is no one to finish up the leftovers. ('if you don't want it, i'll take it,' jaejoong used to offer, before he had even set whatever sweet he was through with down. 'hey, we can share!' yunho used to whine, leaning across the table with a pathetic pout on his lips, ready to beg.) changmin contributes the most to the compost bin in his apartment complex, and the grandmothers down the hall always ask him if he's eating enough.

changmin wonders if he will never get used to living alone, shopping for himself, waking up from a nightmare without having anyone to curl up next to for immediate comfort. even though he was considered the most mature of the group, he was still the youngest, dependent upon his older brothers to take care of him while he was just a kid. by himself, he has none of that support.

but even with their busy schedules, they still make plans to meet at least once a month. (if junsu is doing a tour in another country, he makes sure to phone in even if it means missing a night's rest.) when changmin feels particularly lonely, he looks to his calendar, thinking ahead to their next outing.

'even if we're apart, we're still a family. that won't ever change.'

'wise words, jaejoong hyung. i didn't realize you were capable of those.'

'i'm full of surprises.'

notes: for halcyon_morn - happy birthday!

It isn't that Tiffany's Korean is bad, it's just not entirely polished. Her pronunciation is flawless, when she remembers which vowels to use, but when she messes up it usually ensues in a round of mocking laughter from anyone within listening range.

Normally, laughter doesn't bother her, but this is a special case. And when the girls get back from their latest television appearance with the members of 2PM, she is curled up on the couch with her head in Jessica's lap, muttering to herself.

"Great, I was hoping to leave the ditzy valley girl image back in California."

Jessica snickers quietly into her hand, stifling her laughter so as not to hurt Tiffany's feelings, but her legs are shaking.

"I thought you were on my side," Tiffany pouts, glaring up at her.

"I am! But you have to admit... that was pretty funny. Especially since it's not the first time you've made that mistake."

Turning to hide her face in her friend's laugh, Tiffany groans with frustration. "It's not my fault jewel and mushroom sound so similar."

"Oh calm down." After a pause, Jessica adds, "I bet he thought it was cute."

Tiffany throws a small tantrum, no small feat considering how cramped the couch is. "I bet he thinks I'm a spaz."

Jessica is tempted to point out that Tiffany is a spaz, but thinks better of it, taking to stroking her hair in what she hopes is a consoling manner. Generally, she leaves this task up to TaeYeon, but their leader is off making a solo appearance, and there really isn't anyone else who knows how to handle the situation. Besides that, Tiffany seems more in a mood to converse in English than Korean. "I don't know what you're so worried about. Didn't he say he liked you best?"

"He also said he liked me least. He was probably just making it up to me after I made him drink all that vinegar."

"Aiish, you're so pessimistic."

"I need to find another way to introduce myself..."

Jessica laughs. "Maybe if you think 'mushroom', you'll say 'jewel.'"

"I hate you."

Desperate times call for desperate measures. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. There comes a time that action must be taken.

These were the mantras RyeoWook recited again and again as he sat with his knees pulled up to his chest, wondering when YehSung - JongWoon hyung - would get home from his latest blind date and what stories he'd have to tell.

When YehSung's mother brought the first girl around, neither he nor RyeoWook had been very excited about it. He had complained about not needing to be set up, about being too busy, about being uninterested. RyeoWook had consoled him by telling him that, after the first couple tries, his mother would probably give up on finding herself a daughter-in-law.

But three months had passed and, like clockwork, every Saturday (if they weren't abroad) YehSung was asking his best friend and roommate what he should wear to meet the latest "catch" his mother had found for him.

If there was a change in YehSung's attitude, it was the shift from outright protest (carrying all the way from his room down the hall when his mother would occasionally have to drag him out of bed and shove him through the door) to quiet resignation. RyeoWook recognized the danger in even this small shift - it would be just another small bump into acceptance, compliance, eventually hope. The thought scared him.

Then you should take your chance while you still have it.

But how did you tell your best friend that you liked him, have perhaps been falling slowly deeper and deeper in love with him since that "fateful" meeting three and a half years ago? How did you disclose such a private part of yourself without expecting things to change? If there was one thing RyeoWook was terrified of, it was change - things were so unstable in his life as it was, he wanted to depend upon at least their friendship.

YehSung came home late that night, apparently not surprised to find RyeoWook sitting up with a book that he didn't seem to be so interested in.

"Ugh. What a mess," he announced, flopping down to join him on the bed, only his tie undone and hanging loosely around his neck.

"It didn't go well?" RyeoWook asked, quietly, reaching to stroke his hair.

YehSung made a face. "She was too loud. And kept making fun of how big my head is. I think she thought it was cute. I don't wanna talk about it."

RyeoWook bit back a smile, forcing himself to look just as displeased as his hyung apparently felt. They stayed like that in silence, until RyeoWook found what he hoped was the appropriate response. "I don't think hyung's head is big..."

He was rewarded with a smile, YehSung reaching up to take his hand and twist their fingers together. "Thanks. I can always depend on RyeoWookie to cheer me up."

For the time being, that would have to be enough.
