Having left NYC 23 years ago, I'd forgotten what it was like to be caught in traffic. We left home at 9 AM to go to the Fryeburg (Maine) Fair because seniors got in free today. It's the biggest fair in our area. New Hampshire doesn't have a state fair, only an assortment of county fairs. They are nothing like the huge Ohio State Fair I attended nearly every year as a kid.
When we were about three miles from the fairground, traffic came to a standstill. In 40 minutes, we moved less than 1/10th of a mile. Hubby declared the situation intolerable, and I agreed, so we made a U-turn and headed to Portsmouth, NH instead for a lobster dinner. We get withdrawal symptoms if we don't have an occasional lobster.
The temperature was in the 70s, there was a brilliant blue sky, a view that disappeared into infinity, and our gorgeous New England fall foliage was at its peak. The drive was breathtaking...and me without my camera. I didn't expect to need it at the fair. I should know better than to be on the roads this time of year without a camera.
We went to our favorite restaurant, on the water, and had lobster, baked potatoes, homemade rolls, chowder to die for, and oysters on the half-shell. We passed on dessert and bought four kinds of their homemade fudge to bring home. Yum, yum!
All in all, it was a glorious New England day. If we go to the fair next year, we'll leave about 6 AM. Or we could just go to Portsmouth for another scrumptious seafood dinner.
I did take a couple photos of the foliage as seen from my deck when we got home.
With the fog moving in...
