It's not like he doesn't try.
He spends his waking hours trying not to think about the way his hands molded into his and her hair that nuzzled against his chin when they hugged.
At nights, he tries so hard to leave those tears in his eyes as the air blows in the scent of rain through the barely-opened window. The scent that always reminded him of her.
It was a cold night, just like all nights are. She was huddled in a too-big coat and her cheeks were stained red with frost. He pulled over on her driveway and she all but ran into the truck, trailing raindrops on the leather seat.
"You're late."
Charlie smiled as he kissed her on a cheek, "Where do you want to go?"
"Anywhere."

They were sharing a sundae, a cliched form of love that Renee wanted to indulge in.
"I really want to get out of Forks, Charlie."
Charlie nodded absentmindedly, entranced by a smudge of fudge on her upper lip and he was restraining himself so hard to kiss it away
