I decided to do a quick analysis of the economics of my netflix usage.  The conclusion: a very good deal for what I've paid.

I have had an account now for 20 months.  For the majority of that time, I was on the $20/month three disc plan.  I am now on the $25/month four disc plan.  I've expended approximately $425.

Thus far, I have received 134 discs since I signed up for netflix service in March 2011.  This includes all of the Wire, all of Six Feet Under, dozens of movies, various discs of the Simpsons, a season of Dexter, five seasons of House, and a multitude of other random shows.  Additionally, approximately 400 things have been streamed on my account.  I am too lazy to count, but that looks and sounds about right.  This includes all of Black Books (twice), all of the Office, all of Malcolm in the Middle, all of Kingdom, two seasons of Dexter, four seasons of Breaking Bad &c.

Assuming Netflix pays the standard postage rate of $.44 to send a movie (I assume they actually have a deal with the post office allowing them to pay far less), my subscription has bought me $117.92 in postage.

Further, assuming I would have wanted to purchase many of the series that I watched I would have spent about:

$197 on the Wire
$62 on Six Feet Under
$42 on Black Books
$90 on the three seasons of Dexter
$100+ on Breaking bad

Purchasing these shows on DVD alone would have cost me more than my subscription.  That being said, however, without a netflix subscription I would have probably never had any interest in watching these shows and would have never spent the money on the DVDs (or I could have pirated them or something).

I could also factor in that I could have been doing something productive with all the time that I spent watching all these things.  But, on the other hand, I could have also been doing something even less productive and even more expensive with my time.
