Chapter 3
Leeteuk left his first class with a smile. The first week of school was always so simple. Most professors simply gave out the syllabus, talked about what will be expected, and then let class out early. He loved college life. Leeteuk stopped in front of the psychology department office. He walked in and saw his advisor.
“Ms. Gloria, here is my schedule, I have some time now if you want to fill in my degree plan,” he said and the woman smiled.
“Sure thing lets go into my office,” said Gloria and they walked in. Gloria checked off the courses Leeteuk was taking this semester but then frowned as she looked over the whole plan.
“Is something wrong,” asked Leeteuk worried.
“I’m sure it’s nothing, but Leeteuk when did you take your appreciation?” Leeteuk looked at her confused.
“My what,” he giggled.
“Each student is required to take one appreciation course, art, music, or theater,” she explained and Leeteuk shook his head.
“Whoa, I didn’t know that, I haven’t taken one.”
“Well most students do their freshman year, but no worries, we will just slip it in since you have a light schedule,” smiled the woman and Leeteuk sunk down in his seat. Gloria looked at her computer and spotted an opening.
“We have tons of entering freshman right now so the courses are swamped, but luckily there is an opening for Theater Appreciation at 10:35 Tuesdays and Thursdays,” she explained and Leeteuk sat up.
“Um, what about another course, you said art or music right,” he asked and Gloria sighed.
“They are all taken and I wouldn’t suggest putting this off. I know it seems like just some freshman course but it is a core requirement and without it you can’t graduate,” informed Gloria and Leeteuk looked down.
“I’m not a real fan of the theater that’s all but you know I’ll do what I must to graduate,” nodded Leeteuk. Gloria smiled.
“You’re always a great student, I know you will have no problem with this class,” she said as she handed him the new schedule.
“Thanks, bye,” said Leeteuk and he left feeling like his day was down the drain. He hated theater and knew that Shakespeare would come up in one-way or another. Leeteuk managed to get through his English courses with an A thanks to Heechul majoring in it but theater was different and Leeteuk wasn’t looking forward to the class. He had some time before his next class and decided to get some lunch. He knew tomorrow wouldn’t be much better since he would have theater, but he didn’t want to think about it. He sighed and made his way to go find Kangin for lunch.
Eunhyuk and Donghae were in Eunhyuk room as Hae began to kiss his neck. They didn’t have class the rest of the day and Donghae gripped Eunhyuk thigh as he kissed him aggressively. Eunhyuk sighed and pushed him off before sitting up. Eunhyuk ran a hand through his hair trying to figure out why it seemed so much different with him. Donghae looked at him insulted.
“What’s your deal,” he asked frustrated and Eunhyuk gave him a look.
“My deal, you’re the one pouncing on me all of a sudden,” Eunhyuk smirked and shook his head, “what’s going on Donghae?” He quickly got up and put on his pants.
“You know what, forget it, the mood is totally ruined and I need to get back to the frat house anyways,” Donghae said frustrated and Eunhyuk rolled his eyes.
“I don’t remember the mood being there in the first place. After two months are you telling me you forgot about how to make love,” Eunhyuk asked and he looked at him then put on his shirt.
“No, but after two months you sure as hell forgot how to be a good boyfriend,” Donghae said back angry shocking Eunhyuk. He sighed and looked down.
“I didn’t mean that,” Hae said lowly and Eunhyuk was just quiet. He walked over to the bed and sat down.
“I’m sorry, I just have a lot on my mind and I’m sorry,” Hae sighed and Eunhyuk nodded a little still not looking at him. He got up.
“I better go,” he said and then left leaving Eunhyuk there confused. What was happening to their relationship? After months apart Eunhyuk just knew things would be so great when he got back but something was wrong and he had no clue what it was.
The next day Leeteuk slowly made his way into the theater room. He saw a bunch of freshmen he didn’t know and realized it would be a small class. The teacher walked on stage and Leeteuk tried not to giggle as the woman got everyone’s attention. Leeteuk sat down and looked at his professor’s attire. She was wearing pink glasses, a colorful robe, and had a scarf wrapped around her neck. Leeteuk knew this woman was all about expressing herself.
“Welcome my dears and future thespians. This is Theater Appreciation and we will have a wonderful time. This course will be simple as long as you do what I say. You will learn about the theater and more important, how to put on a play. I usually take a different approach but this semester we will be focusing on one single performance and you will be graded on your participation, simple enough,” she asked and the students nodded but Leeteuk knew it was too good to be true.
“Good, now let me introduce myself, I am Mrs. Lee but I hope to get acquainted with you all so please call me Hyori. We will dive right into the theater today. Most professors bore you all to death with a syllabus but not I. This is the theater and we perform. This semester we will perform a classic love story,” she began and Leeteuk crossed his fingers.
“Not Shakespeare, not Shakespeare,” he whispered to himself.
“William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet,” she revealed and Leeteuk shook his head thinking it was just his luck.
“Today we will begin auditions for our dear, sweet, Romeo, so beware. Oh Romeo, art thou out there,” she smiled and the students laughed at her enthusiasm. Soon the door opened and everyone turned to see who it was. Leeteuk spotted the guy and quickly sunk down in her chair shocked and confused.
“A late arrival I see,” said Mrs. Lee and Yesung cleared his throat.
“I apologize but I was lost, it won’t happen again,” he assured and the woman smiled.
“Please come up on stage,” she instructed and he gulped but did as he was told. She looked him over.
“Oh yes, yes, this could work, tell me what is your name?”
“Kim Joongwoon but you can call me Yesung,” he said a bit shy and embarrassed.
“Do you know the theater, Yesung?” He nodded.
“Actually I took this course at Shinwa, but the credit didn’t transfer so I am back in it again,” he said and she clapped her hands causing him to look at her cautiously as she wrapped an arm around his.
“Oh good a fellow thespian, let’s see what you’ve got.” She handed him a script and pointed at a place.
“Read,” she instructed. He was about to begin.
“Oh, wait,” she said and quickly sat down in her chair in front of the stage. She signaled for the assistant to turn the lights off leaving only the stage lights on and Yesung winced as his eyes got used to the light.
“Begin my dear,” she nodded and he cleared his throat looking at the script.
“Um there are two parts,” he said and the woman stood up.
“You are correct, Kyujong please read the part of Benvolio for us and Yesung you read Romeo,” she said as the assistant grabbed a script and got on stage.
“No, coz, I rather weep,” started Kyujong. Yesung gulped then began.
“Good heart, at what?”
“At thy good heart's oppression,” said Kyujong as the teacher listened.
“Why, such is love's transgression.
Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast,
Which thou wilt propagate, to have it prest
With more of thine: this love that thou hast shown
Doth add more grief to too much of mine own.
Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs;
Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes;
Being vex'd a sea nourish'd with lovers' tears:
What is it else? a madness most discreet,
A choking gall and a preserving sweet.
Farewell, my coz,” finished Yesung and Mrs. Lee stood up clapping.
“You are a natural born Romeo,” she said excitedly and walked on stage.
“Class welcome our new Romeo and lead in our performance for the end of the semester,” she announced and the students cheered as Yesung’s eyes widened.
“Oh um, no, that’s not true, there are plenty of guys here who….”
“Oh dear Yesung don’t be shy for Romeo is not the shy type,” she informed and walked off the stage before he could say anything.
“That is all for today class. On Thursday we will find our Juliet so beware,” she informed. Yesung walked toward her as the other students began walking out.
“Mrs. Lee I am flattered really, but this part isn’t for me. What about Tybalt or another role, the prince, anything,” he begged and she laughed.
“You are too good to be killed off or left with a few lines.”
“No I’m not, kill me please,” he pleaded and she laughed again. She grabbed his hand.
“Don’t worry you will be fine and once we find your Juliet you will be more comfortable. Besides it isn’t Broadway or the Globe Theater Joongwoon. It will only be performed in front of the student body and guests,” she informed and his eyes widened.
“What,” he asked shocked.
“Well yes, you see, every semester I put on a play and this semester I am having my class do it instead of me teaching the course plus doing a play. Kills two birds with one stone,” she smiled and patted his shoulder.
“Don’t worry by the time we put it on you will be ready my dear. I bid you adieu,” she said before he could refuse anymore. Yesung sighed and sat on the stage with his script trying to understand what just happened. Leeteuk watched in the distance out of sight feeling the same way…confused.
