Okay, tonight was pretty cool. Actually, all day seemed good. But tonight was really fun, despite how I thought it could've gone based on the premise.
Let me explain. The idea started with Vince's wanting a full birthday weekend. So the plan for tonight was to suit-up to black tie standards, then enjoy an ironic meal at some place very casual and cheap. It started to look bleak the closer the day approached earlier in the week. People weren't confirming and such. But mainly because it really was just more of an idea than an actual plan. But it basically came together within the last 24 hours. Though we weren't necessarily "black tie" appropriate, we all looked quite fanciful in our formal wear. Especially once we showed up to Country Buffet. With coupons. All that silliness aside, I'm really more excited about the part after the buffet.
A while ago, we took note of this Korean karaoke bar not 1 minute from my house. It looked kinda shady, but we kept it in the back of our minds -- though, never actually checked it out. Once Vince decided he wanted to maybe to karaoke for his birthday, we began investigating more into it. We started by asking the friendly lady at the Korean restaurant we frequently visit. I asked if there were any places nearby that have karaoke, specifically noraebang. I remember super fun times when ML used to take us all to karaoke, but it was always the private rooms. That way you sing and make fools of yourselves in front of people you know and can laugh at -- not complete strangers, on a stage. Also, you just keep picking songs, taking turns, rather than submitting one to the DJ and waiting behind random people you don't care about.
ANYWAY, I asked about noraebang, and she mentioned the place right near my house. I was kind of doubtful that it had private rooms, though. From the exterior, it looked kind of small. Leading up to tonight, Vince kept suggesting we check it out to confirm whether or not it was what we're were looking for. Jesse on the other hand, felt like we should keep it a surprise and just show up. Put it off. Put it off... Until finally, I was feeling particularly proactive and swung by. Only hours before the birthday night began. It looked closed, but I saw a number on a banner overhanging the place. Went home, called the number. Old number, but got referred to the proper one. Called and found out it indeed had private room karaoke! It turns out, it really is a small place and only has two rooms, plus the bar area and a stage in the front. But it was what I was looking for all along. Right there. Down the street from me. The room had big couches, a decent selection of songs, and the pricing was fair. And the lady who owns (I think) the place is nice. We ended up staying some 5 hours. Good stuff.
I think the general expectation that comes with the term "karaoke" is the idea of late-night bar volunteers on a stage next to a dance floor. I'm just happy that I found a local noraebang establishment and could share this with my friends. I walked in and thought, "This looks right." You can close the door, chill on a couch with a drink, and sing as many songs back-to-back as your friends will allow.
