Operation Beautiful Mother's Day

For Mother's Day I took my mom and dad out to breakfast. I would have only taken my mother but my father's near-fatal heart attack in January taught me that I should never wait until Father's Day to tell him I love and appreciate him. We had a blast.

Afterward, my sister, mom and I went to the Mother's Day carnival that Carson City has every year. On Mother's Day, moms get in for cheap if they buy their kids an unlimited ride pass. So there were a lot of moms out and about.

Everyone I know who's had kids tells me that after the kid they feel gross. They feel fat, like their bodies aren't as awesome as they used to be. They feel unattractive and slovenly because they can't dedicate any time to themselves. So we had resolved to bring Operation Beautiful to the mothers!

We started last week by putting together "kits" to hand out. We got all of the materials from the dollar store and the cheap fake flowers section at Michaels, so all together this took about thirty dollars - split between the three of us it cost about ten bucks, which made around 180 kits to hand out.

Each "joy kit" was in a cute little favor bag that I found in the wedding section of the dollar store. We decorated them a bit and filled them them with an Operation Beautiful note (with an attached favor ring), a piece of candy, and a piece of fake flowers. Then we stapled them up.

The notes were cute! Each one had a quote about parenthood or motherhood, a message about being beautiful, and the link to Operation Beautiful.

Then we went to Mills Park and handed them out. A lot of people smiled! I think we might have made a few people's day. I gave one to our city's Sheriff to give to his wife, too, and Ashley said she showed up and he gave it to her. :) I know a few people came up to me to thank me for making their day, so it worked!

We're thinking about different, interesting ways to do Operation Beautiful. Post-its are awesome and we still do them, of course, but the more innovative and interesting they are, the more likely people are to remember it and pay it forward.
