when darkness turns to light, it ends tonight

laughing with sadie
on the pre-sunrise trip to the airport
the crazy clicking lady in line
alice and richard at the security check
the 4 hour phx delay
enjoyed with marlboros and fosters
the just back from iraq soilder
who couldn't stop his tai chi
not even for turbulence
the trip down the sac escalator
jay picking me up in his hug
his summons of the expedition
wayne driving us all over sac, oroville, yuba city
picking up the land cruiser
sitting in the boat in the backyard waiting for the surprise
poker at the loud peoples house
my first pleasant experience with sierra nevada
the trees, the rain, wayne and jay on
mallory, one foot shorter than me
triton and logan fighting over where to sit
the trip for coffee
gassing up the hummer
the party in the yard
hugging old friends
walking right back into conversations like only weeks had passed
the trip up the mountain in the land cruiser
the trip up and then down the mountain in the jeep
neither containing a moment of fear
when a flip down the mountain was possible at every moment
that moment when i could have made it happen
my hesitation getting the best of me
that fear that i just don't understand
the early morning breakfasts with jay and wayne
the waitress at country waffle giving me those looks
the letters from prison
the trips through chico
the days at the office
working on the computer for wayne
signing paperwork for jay
over the hedge with the kids
"jesjes watch me!"

i remember it all now
what it means to be here
what these people mean to me
and what i mean to them
i can't believe i let so much time go by
when you have people that truly value you
for no other reason than just to spend time with you
it's an unbelievable thing
the doubt, the hesitation, the ridiculousness of all of that
the subsiding, the understanding, the calm
