An old close friend has been suffering through this condition for the last couple of months. My friend is convinced of being infested with mites/scabies/lice, and their house and pets are infested as well. Lots of their furniture has been (needlessly) trashed. House has been (over) treated for mites, etc. My friend has seen a dermatologist a few times, and they find nothing, and now my friend says the dermatologists are all quacks and the doctors are all conspiring against my friend. My friend is self-treating to the extreme. Ordering stuff from the internet that is for vets and professional pest control. My friend now has "burned" skin from self treating with lice stuff, industrial sulfur, industrial strength pesticides put directly on skin, and ingested ivermectin for horses. Recently, my friend fell and broke an arm at the radial, a bad break. I suspect that may have been related to the ingestion of Ivermectin. Could be wrong about that tho. My friend has lots of sleepless nights over the last couple of months and isn't eating right. Constantly tearing at skin, scalp, and causing mild bleeding. When the wounds scab, heal, and itch, my friend thinks its bugs and the bug are crawling out and my friend tears off scab again. Viscous cycle. Even treating their dogs for mange when they don't have mange. I have talked with National mental health and a few other places already. Tons of data, but it is still a difficult balance with someone between harming themselves and autonomy. The cops cannot arrest someone for believing they have mites or their house is infested (it isn't). A psychiatrist cannot help if none is sought willingly.
I think some meds to help sleep and deal with the psychological side are in order, but my friend is unwilling to listen and the mere suggestion will cause a rage reaction.
Its essentially an evolutionary disorder. The dermis and brain being intimately linked. Similar to an auto immune disorder? But it has a psychological component too?
My friend is on medicare and has kaiser. Just wish the docs were more proactive with the mental health stuff, because without addressing that part, I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel.
