this was my final project for my digital photography class which i called 'abandonement.' this is the write-up along with the photos.
We grow up fast and tend not to think about the things we leave behind in our high speed race towards maturity. It might not be intentional neglect but as our innocence is shed these things we leave behind take on the quality of abandonment. A playground that was once full of laughing, playing children can become almost a museum of things and ideas we once loved. Eventually abandonment leads to decay and deterioration. But in this decay there is a beauty created by a strong feeling of nostalgia, solemnity, and even loneliness. We can see things that are broken and remember when they were new. In this series abandonment is shown as a progression of deterioration and color. The color in the images becomes less bright and saturated in the images that show more degradation. Taking away the color from the images helps create a feeling of loss and strengthens the sense of deterioration of the subject and the image itself. Connecting the mood of the subject with the image makes the photograph more cohesive and it carries more emphasis. This series is meant to evoke nostalgia and show that abandonment will in time eat away at the things that represent what we once were or at least what we once loved.
