CHAYPER THAN DERT!

tonight's episode comes to you from auburn, alabama, where we will be spending the night sleeping on the screened porch of my godmother. a professor of ecology and microbiology at the university. subjects in brief:

-the cemeteries in new orleans are above ground on account of that hurricane awhile back. remember that? yeah. the buildings still have water lines about halfway up and they're still clearing the debris. i made the mistake of looking into one of the open mausoleums, where there was a coffin that had been broken open, and inside, a crumpled up blue calico dress, some shards of bone, and dust. damn.
-anyway.
-DONUTS. and coffee, and fried oyster po' boys, and crawdad tails, and fancy fried grit cakes. fancy fried delicious grits. the south. THE SOUTH.
-the best cat call i've ever gotten, from a guy who was speaking creole with his friends outside a bar on bourbon street. it went like this (liltingly) "beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. girl, there isn't even a word for what you are." see? see? see how much better that is than honking? see?
-we arrived in auburn in record time, burning through mississippi in a few hours among flash thunderstorms that only hovered over delta bridges, although we almost missed our exit in the midst of excitement that was generated by talking about weirdos Diana and I knew in high school (in latin class and band, respectively).
-and tomorrow...PAUL AND ORION. alabama to atlanta to virginia. the last long drive of the trip, it'll be about ten or eleven hours of the appalachian mountains. now it's really time for me to wish i hadn't watched Deliverance.

SUMMAH-TAHYME!
