01. sonic youth - i was really floored by the goo album when i first heard it, and have subsequently been floored by several other of their records in the ensuing years since (most recently bad moon rising, and im expecting good things from sonic nurse when i finally hear it). i was playing guitar at this point and i had no idea how they made their guitars sound like that. it didnt take much to get into stuff like my bloody valentine after that.
02. faith no more - the first band i got into that was really doing their own thing. to give you an idea of what i was into at the time, i had a dubbed tape of fnm's the real thing with motley crue's dr feelgood on the other side.
03. einsturzende neubauten - the first group i heard after sonic youth that really made me go "whaaa?" to this day im totally and completely in awe of this group. the only group whose logo id consider getting inked somewhere on my body, theyve affected me that much, and from all the other people ive seen with tattoos of it (probably second only to rocket from the crypt!), im not the only one.
04. iron maiden - it was here that i discovered REAL metal. i soon had tapes by metallica, megadeth, anthrax, slayer, motorhead, helloween, overkill, etc, and quit listening to motley crue.
05. plan-it-x records (against me!, this bike is a pipe bomb, operation:cliff clavin, the devil is electric, ghost mice, defiance ohio, more) - i was a little late in discovering this happy little corner of DIY folk/pop/etc-punk practically right in my backyard, but ive been totally won over by the sincerety, honesty, and good hearts of everyone involved with this label. their dedication to making punk inexpensive, educational, and really fun pretty much outshines all the negative aspects of bein' punk. i hope they keep it up for a hundred more years!
06. the pogues - im old, so im going to do more than 5, sorry. probably the second band i really got into that was doing their own thing. a friend of mine (this was middle school) told me about them so i got their tape from the library and it was totally insane! shane's completely mad, but he somehow wrote some of the best songs ive ever heard.
07. verve - yes, the same band that did bittersweet symphony, but i thought that was pretty crap. their first full length called a storm in heaven, however, is my favorite record of all time, bar none. ive listened to it at least once every week or two for the past 11 fucking years and im still not sick of it. already there is my favorite song ever, absolutely flawless. its hard to describe this album. it doesnt really sound like anything else. im sometimes reminded of the cocteau twins, but when i think about it they dont really sound much alike. theres just so much going on sonically in this record, i still keep hearing new things in it.
08. honorable mention - cocteau twins, X, bjork, napalm death (really!), jeff buckley, 7 seconds (first hardcore band i really got into, and their lyrics meant a lot to me).
